Trying to make the Vineland show tomorrow -Well, that was a waste of a perfectly good Saturday. Finally finished the disc brake installation. However, the three month rest period didn't sit well with the 59 Beetle. The Initial test drive was vacillating between two and three cylinders. Quick cleaning of the jets produced a smooth running engine -But only temporarily.
The old nemesis has surfaced again-fuel starvation. The first clue is the electric fuel pump. It should only take seconds to fill the float bowls, any longer means its struggling to get fuel to the carburetors. The second clue is when it sets for a little while it runs perfect only to stumble and miss as soon as it's back on the road and accelerated.
The fix is to replace or modify the fuel shutoff valve that is screwed under and into the gas tank. the last time I managed to ream the corroded tube while it sat in the gas tank, but that quick fix came back to haunt me. One problem in replacing the unit is the nut that screws to the tank tend to weld it's self to the threads of the tank. No one makes new tanks for that year. Perhaps tomorrow a good used tank will show up. *buG
