We got the small, aluminum 1.5 ton HF jack when we were racing Miatas a few years ago. Had no problems with it during 4-5 years of use - and we beat the hell out of it. Also cheap enough that if you wear it out you just get another. I am still using that jack for the Bug.

That is opposed to the expensive piece of crap jack I initially bought from Sears while we were building the Miata. That jack leaked from day one, had no rebuild kit available and was twice as heavy as the HF jack. Sears wanted no part of servicing or taking back that POS.

Thanks, Richard.  \LIKE= That makes me feel better; I'm always a little leery about something from HF. I do draw the line, though, at their handtools. I started building up my Snap-On collection when I started working as a mechanic back in the late 60's.

Update: Had to exchange the jack. The rubber oil fill plug was leaking from its center, after doing the setup, when you pump the jack. Saw a YouTube video that showed a screw not a rubber plug. The replacement 1.5 Ton has a screw. Plug was jack #62496, screw is jack #60569. they had a bunch of both; if anyone plans to buy one, look for the #60569.

Thanks Jack and Richard for your input. Looks like this jack will work fine.

had the Bentley manual right in front of me

BTW- the flat washer-#13. when the wheel is assembled and torqued- should this washer be loose? When I put in the large rubber bearing cover-#11, I tried to sit it down into the metal cover as deep as I could but the washer still moved around a bit.

Today I replaced the shift rod bushings on my bus without removing the transmission.

I really thought I read something that said it could be done, and even explained how, so I bought the bushings. Now I can't find anything about replacing them without removing the transmission. Just a bunch of things saying it can't be done, or you must remove the transmission.
So maybe I dreamed it up, but somehow it got done.

The automatic choke was sticking on both carbs in the squareback. Took apart the choke and noticed that the little pot in the back of the choke that is connected to the spring lever was sticking. Sprayed some cleaner, worked it in a little, reassembled and reset the choke. Works great now. Now I gotta do the other side.

I watched George convince my engine that idling is a good thing to do... and then, after shake-down #2,  watched him adjust all four brakes in less than five minutes. The man has skills!

Started all the VW's up, found John Doe's battery could not hold a charge. Researched and found VW bug batteries are size known as 42. Duralast from autozone got very good reviews regarding their longevity and cycling between full drains and recharge. Being as cheap as possible, found a coupon to get 20% off. Will put the battery in tomorrow.
