Hey guys, Just wanted to know if anybody has their line out of the expansion tank re routed under the car instead of back to the canister. I read a thread on the samba about it, people said they have it re routed somewhere under the trunk. If any of you guys did this let me know, cause I'd like to see how this was done. I've seen pictures on how to replace the charcoal in the canister... but that seems like a PIA unless you have the plastic version of the canister. Some people no the thread talked about removing the expansion tank completely and just rerouting the fumes into the tank. I know now this is bad. I was thinking about re routing it under the down into the the spare tire well, and then down through the a hole towards the ground. The problem is it smells like gas, when I fill up past half a tank, or if If I make a turn to sharp.

Thanks again for your help!!!

Greg,

what expansion tank? do you mean the charcoal canister under the right rear fender? or the long plastic strip that sits just ahead of the wiper motor ?

You shouldnt have gas in it, its for fumes. You better check what you did.

There is a black canister in the trunk on the pass front side I'll post the pic of it after I upload it to coppermine I've posted it before. I didn't touch anything jack it's still stock I was asking b4 I messed with it.

So it's Gastank ----> Black tank in trunk---->Charcoal Cansister in the Back. Bob I think you are right, but in the regular beetle the strip is front pass side.  I looked at dad's and he doesn't have one in that spot he has a super.

Greg,

heres what I did on my super..

First off no canister in the front of the car, never had one. I had the charcoal canister in the rear pass. side fender but it was never hooked up. Now I do have the long plastic "Collector" under the windshield and behind the "air box". I routed all the vent lines from the tank to the plastic collector and ran just 1 line from the collector to a spot under the left front fender. As the article from your samba post said, you need a "high spot" above the tank wher the fumes will rise as the gas expands and contracts. Thats what the plastic thing is for. Normally that would vent back to the charcoal canister and the fumes absorbed there but since I didn't have the lines to the rear of the car and the canister was in bad shape I just vented the plastic collector out the front of the car. I never have a problem with fumes when filling up. You might also check your hoses on the gas tank and your fuel tank cap. All this stuff must be in good shape or gas can seep past the hoses and make a good stink! The fuel cap should be a non vented stock one and not a cheapo pepboys replacement since some of them have a built in vent that will allow gas to slosh out on a sharp turn. Ask me how I know this one..went through 3 caps after I lost the original and finally found an OEM replacement the best. This stuff Ain't Rocket science you just need a good idea of what every part is for.

Bob, I traced the hoses today after dad helped me bang some dents out. It goes from the tank, to the plastic collector thing, then a hose goes up by the windshield comes down and one hoses exits into the tank, another exits out the left fender, I guess like yours. I looked at the hose and it was clogged so I stuck a screw driver into it *hose end was metal* and blew into and heard the air going into the plastic tank. Hopefully this will cure the fume problem... if not I will change the braided lines for rubber ones if that doesn't work I'll just deal with working on a gasoline high.  :o I'll check my gas cap, I'm pretty sure it's the stock.

Jack I'm just trying to make it so fumes arn't getting into the cab. hopefully uncloging the vent will do the trick.

one of those fittings on the plastic thing must vent the fumes out side the car. Originally I think one ran to the charcoal canister in the back. There is probaly a steel line running from the back to that plastic thing. I didn't connect them to anything, just 3 vent lines from the tank and on the 4th connection a chunk of neoprene fuel line out the fender and under the car. You must have a way for that thing to vent the fumes out or you are just backing up the fumes in the tank and sooner or later they will find a way out and you will be smelling gas again.

If I recall the routing of mine, one of the hoses goes to a fitting in the fuel filler at the gas cap. I don't remember ANY of the hoses just exiting out to the open air!
