Here's a good source for LED bulb replacements for dash bulbs
www.auto-hub.com (http://www.auto-hub.com)
They have them for all models
-
I've had my eye on these for a while. Just waiting for the electrical stage of the rebuild.
I wish they had them for the tail lights, too.
Do you have first hand experience with these?
-
In truck stops they sell LED replacements for just about any standard bayonette bulbs.
I know they have a few different options for 1156 and 1157.
-
has anyone actually used any of these yet? If so, please let us know what you think of them. Brightness, install, etc...
-
I ordered some yesterday. If MugBug catches Fire or I launch them across the street because they are a PITA to install I'll let u all know
-
I have not used them, but I have read a few things that say the light from a standard incandescent bulb emits in a round pattern the shape of the glass and LEDs only emit light straight out. And the lenses and light housings that came on vehicles originally equipped with standard bulbs are designed to reflect and concentrate or spread the light pattern accordingly so if you use an aftermarket LED it won't look right in the light housing, but I can't confirm that. If you look at the retro LED bulbs there is usually a few different ones with different size and amounts of LEDs in different patterns for each bulb number. It's like a standard bayonette with a cylinder sticking out with some LEDs around the sides and some on the flat face.
They aren't cheap to experiment with from the truck stops, but I am sure they are way cheaper online.
And that's about all I know about them.

Hey Muggy, that link isn't working for me.
-
try it now

try it now
It works now. These look like they are probably much better than the ones at the truck stops.
-
Ill let ya know- supposedly a wide projection path
-
Yeah, the complaint that seems to be the most consistent is that the lamp's light output tends to be directional. Especially in arrays with fewer segments. Looking forward to your impressions.
-
I got replacements LED's for all of the bulbs in my taillight housings then went to Sylvania Silverstar bulbs because they are brighter then the LED's 11&*
-
Didn't know Silverstar came in anything other than headlights.
Probably a moot point though cause I'd like to stay 6 volts.
...yeah, I know.
-
I think the ones at auto-hub are 6 volt friendly
-
All of the dash lamps are available in both 6v and 12v. The ones for the dome and parking lamps are 12v only, AFAICT.
Just checked Sylvania's web site. I could find no mention of a Silverstar lamp for anything other than a 12v headlight. Searching for other automotive lamps by Sylvania for a '64 beetle found only the standard 6v incandescent.
-
I got two for the speedo illumination, one for the turn signal indicator, dome light, and license plate light.
Like I said, if they suck, ill toss em.
BTW headlights should be replaced by hella h4s on all VWs - so much better visibility skid))
-
I don't know anything about 6v or what their versions of common bulbs like 1156 and 1157 are, but I just googled
6v LED automotive bulb
And found a bunch of results for ba9 and ba7. Not sure if that's helpful or not.

Staying 6v is like staying Quill & Ink. (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HnTD7AfiIbU/VRvr4uCZMkI/AAAAAAAAUHk/LW0nlpbEbFI/w236-h185-no/Quill.jpg)
-
I get mine at Auto Zone and Amazon sells them http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-SilverStar-Performance-Halogen-Miniature/dp/B009ELOAX4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1427893728&sr=8-2&keywords=1157+silverstar
-
So, they really do exist!!
Still can't find them on the Sylvania site. Go figure.
Thanks Jack.

Or like taking pictures with actual film.

Any word on the dash bulbs from the future? 4thinking6
Can't 6v and 12v get along +hug the voltage might be different, but after you shift through all the 9(( the switches are the same 11&*
Now if it was a 6 volt reverse polarity -vomit\
-
Just got them yesterday and put them in the pile of other stuff I ordered and am too lazy to install
=LAUGH

My dad's '40 Packard is 6v positive ground.
Hell of a lot more wiring and devices than my Beetle and it runs just fine.
Just sayin...
-
Yeah, I was just joking about the -vomit\, positive vs negative ground systems really aren't that much different. If the wiring is in good shape, a reverse polarity electrical system should work fine. The main reason people decide to switch to negative ground from positive ground is Radio/Accessory upgrades. I did this once for a customers jaguar because he was sick of the stock radio and wanted to play CD's.
I'm sure your dad's Packard runs fine, the Packard was and is the definition of an automotive engineering marvel. The Packard was the first car (1940?) to have power (hydro/electric) windows... the Beetle got p/w in 1998.

tongue\ I have piles for 3 VW'S No time time/engery violent
-
OHHHHHHHHHHHH NO, you guys want to see who has a bigger pile. Oh my pile is HUGE! mountainous geological formation that can be seen from google maps! In fact i'm adding to my pile! asttound
ps ...i am talking about vw parts piles mo-on
-
Since the weather's been decent and work's been slow we can almost use the kitchen table again... soon. Maybe.
-
I've been collecting parts for my Beetle for the last two years. The only reason I don't have the biggest pile is because I have three piles.
I've got piles in the shed, in the garage and in one of the spare bedrooms! Really not fair to call it a bedroom as the only furniture that fits in there now is a folding work table, small dresser and a couple shelving units -- ALL of which are covered with parts. The floor is covered with, what else, new floor pans. And fenders. And deck lids...
I win! tongue\
-
I must admit my pile is small, no more big piles for me I'm done with that after 3 bugs, Volksrod, a Bay and now a Vanagon......................
Alls that left is to enjoy what I have afrobanana\
-
Have to say- put new license plate LED bulb in last night. These things are BRIGHT! *buG

Did you get warm or cool?
Like the look?
-
I got cool because I'm a cool guy 8rofl=
got bulbs for reverse, interior, speedo lighting, and directional.
