Can the front firewall tin be installed with the engine in the car? The PO never installed one as well as the rear engine seal and I'm thinking probably not a good thing as far as keeping the engine cool. 4thinking6

Rich,
The front firewall tin can be installed with the engine in the car. But, it will be very tight on the drivers side if it is a dual port engine. The engine must be out to install the back engine seal. If you run the engine in hot weather without the tin and seals, the engine will over heat! The back seal prevents hot exhaust air from being pulled in the cooling fan. Without that seal the air keeps getting hotter and hotter! old-\

Thx Bob.
Yep, I'm doing an inventory now of tins that I'm missing. Why do these PO's leave this stuff off after pulling the dang engine and the reinstall? violent
Just reinstall the same stuff you took off. For all I know, the flaps in the shroud are probably disconnected, missing, or stuck. I'll squish my hands in there tonight to see.
I'll just wait until when I have to yank the engine to install stuff the right way. In the meantime, I'll drive it as much as Daves' Sunbug so as to not damage it. tongue\

Bob seems i could pull out the rear engine tin and pulley tin and get some of the new seal installed, no?
-
Yes,
But the difficult part will be sliding the rubber seal into the side channels. I would use good quality food grade spray silicone or pine soap in a jar, if you can find it. YoDa

thx bob i might cut it in a few pieces and reglue once installed with weatherstrip adhesive then sgain i might not bother since the front tin is missing
may just wait since my clutch may be worn and telling me to replace it

The clutch job would be the time to do it all. It would save time on everything!

Yo get the stuff
Do a weekend over haul.
It's not like it's a vanagon or anything. Motor out by lunch back in by dinner.

idea\ Ordering stuff shortly.....

Whats with the Vanagon hating? Block is the same as a Beetle.
And the nice part is you can lay on the bed and watch TV while while you pull the engine
-
Not hate. U know removing a beetle motor vs a vanagon is way different.
