So with the chilly months coming up, what are you doing with your ride? Hopefully your getting ready for the cover em up Cruise , but is there anything special you need to do? I'm out in the garage right now hooking up the heat in the beetle. I'm still not sure how the knob has to be when I connect the cables so for the past few years, when it gets chilly, I go underneath and cable tie the heater boxes open so I get non stop heat. And yes, it gets quiet toasty in that car.
We'll get into what you do for your car over the winter later.

Funny you should mention that. Last night I hooked up the last one of two heater hoses. Now all I have to do is just have to turn the ivory nob and I get both heat and defrosters, no choice. Ah, the beauty and simplicity of those early model Beetles. skid))

John, I'm not sure its been many many years that I worked on that I worked on that OLD SYSTEMbut I think you turn the knob counter-cvlockwise till it stops then you hook up the cables.
You also get to smell oil ....
I would find a old set of F/A heater boxes.

My '64 is heat off counter clockwise and heat on clockwise. I does get very toasty in there when on full blast.
...OH, no engine smells in mine. They switched to fresh air system by 64. I think 63 was first year for that, IIRC.

fresh air boxes??? lets keep it original. You always tell me to stop changing things.
And that's not the smell of oil. that's the smell of horsepower!!!

I think the longer cable goes to the right box(Pass. side) if thasts what you mean.

Anyway....
Book says.....
Release threaded cap and pull out heating control knob unit
remove the cable pin by use of drift
screw off threaded sleeve
Drive out grooved pin and withdraw know from the spindle
Lift off threaded cap
Install
Grease cable with universal grease VW A-052 ( I am sure you have that)
The longer end of the heating control cable must be inserting into the right-hand conduit tube (as seen in t the driving direction)
Before installing the heating control knob, turn the knob anti-clockwise until stop can be (word missing) and then turn it clockwise 3 turns
Insert the heating control knob unit, taking care that the guide nose enters the slot in the threaded sleeve.
The heating control knob is properly installed if the threaded sleeve does not stick up above the edge of the conduit tube.

I've rebuilt this 3 times and the issue was always how to hook up the cables at the heater box end.
I'll give it a whack.

John,
If the cable will not go through in the tunnel or the ends are gone. Then use a cotter pin hooked up to the barrel nut on the heater box control arm. Just get the correct size cotter pin that will just fit into the barrel nut. Make a small loop at the end of each cable as needed and hook it to the cotter pin. Be sure to take up any slack in the control to be sure to get the most air flow. I promise it will heat you out of the car at 80 MPH clown Easy peasy!
