Title: Compression Test
Post by: Beetleboi -Greg- on February 18, 2008, 12:55:02 am
I had a question about what i read about compression tests

Step 1. Compression Test.

Note: The compression test should be done with the engine cold.

Pull the spark plug connectors off all four plugs. Inspect the wires and the rubber seals on the ends. If they are worn or defective, replace them.
Stow the wires so you'll know what goes where.
Note: A handy trick is to wrap thin strands of copper wire around both ends of the spark plug wires--one loop for Cylinder #1, two loops for Cylinder #2, and so on. This way there is no question about which wire goes where. Refer to the diagram at the beginning of the Valve Adjustment procedure to see which cylinder is which and where the firing point for each is on the distributor.

With the spark plug socket on the 3/8" ratchet, loosen all four plugs until they're hand tight. Use the extension and socket to screw out the last few threads by hand.
Lay the spark plugs out in a pattern to match the way they came out of the engine. You will carefully inspect and gap the plugs in the next step.
Check the compression with the compression tester:

If you pull all the wires off he plugs, arn't the going to spark? shouldn't you pull the wire out off of the coil?
Or do they mean store the wires so they don't spark and catch your car on fire.

I'm gonna buy the new carb, but I'll borrow Jim's to rebuild. I just feel better knowing that it's new.
I'll giving Jim the rebuilt one back for getting my lights and the brakes unlocked that one time.  ;D
