Title: the NJ DMV gets it right! Hell must be having a snow storm!
Post by: njgt-1 on March 12, 2008, 06:29:09 PM
Guys,

Just got back from our local "friendly" DMV office and it took all of 15 minutes to get a "Collector Voucher". I can't believe it but looks like the  Bradley is going to be legal for at least 2 more years. I went prepared with photo copies of all the previous applications all the way back to 2002. The woman at the info desk ( upon hearing this was a renewal and not a new one ) was nice enough to go to the window and explain to the clerk what I was there for. I think they are spiking the drinking water with Prozac or something similar.  c23 Ok now I just have to get the car over to the inspection station but thats not going to happen until next month. I'll keep everyone posted how that goes!   T1

One more thing, they told me that the state still takes application for this form of registration but now you need a ton of documentation and photos and its up to the DMV gods in Trenton. I suspect to get a car through now it might also include a satanic ceremony involving a dead chicken,  :icon_twisted: a pint of your blood and the title to your first born! Don't ya just love NJ ??  m-d2

Thanks Mike!

Its not over yet, I still have to deal with the inspection zombies and they can still be a pain.

Bob. Congrats 2 you. I've got to renew one of my Collector regs again in about a month or so, hopefully this time around things will go smoother for me, because last time it took me several trips I even had to contact Trenton while standing at MV. And no I'm not talking acid, those folk just didn't know who was on 1st or what was on 2nd fig2 .

Arn't they just going to do a safety check Bob? They arn't going to do an all out inspection on the Bradley?
Brigette went through and there was a lot of chit wrong with her. She only failed for emissions which I was planning on anyway.

Jay,

when dealing with the state keep copies of everything. I waltzed in there with copies of every form, cancelled check, voucher, and names of people I contacted ( including the director of motor vehicles ) clear back to 2002. I also contacted the "Specialty plate division" 2 weeks ago and had the name of the guy who I spoke with. The real answer is to overwhelm them with facts and be prepared.

Greg,

the car sits 6" off the ground and has body parts that can't be replaced. Do you think I want one of the inspection goons jumping in and checking it out on a dyno ? Hell no!
Many years ago I had an Austin Healey Sprite, a very small car. I had one bozo try to lift the car on their front end lift and then he starts yelling at me "how did you drive this car here? the front wheel is locked up?". I jumped out only to find the idiot caught the inside edge of the left wheel with the jack. A supervisor came running when I started to question the guys sanity and legitmatecy of his parents! The only explanation they could give was "it happens". I ended up with a bent rim, ever try to find a rim for an Austin Healey? Thats why I don't trust the Bradley ( or any collector car ) to the NJ inspection.

Bob.
I think I remeber telling my horror story about trying to renew my Collector tags. My problem was that I beleive that I was the 1st person in the area to walk into the new mess, but in the end they grandfathered me so all is Cool.. That is untill my next visit,  and hopefully that one will go well.

thats what I'm wondering, in 2 years do I get the same thing or are going to just dump it and say "tough luck". When we were at the Crusin news event a couple of weeks ago, the guy from SEMA told us of a plan in Pennsylvania to give a special "Street Rod" sticker. It would exempt the cars from inspection but to get it you would have to pass 1 state inspection and if you fail theres no second chance your car won't be able to get registration. Sounds like they are looking for a reason to "weed out" anything they feel isn't up to their standards. All this stuff is getting ridiculous!

Thats a good one! since when is oil pressure something checked in the inspection line?
Sounds like something the DMV in NJ would come up with.

Hello all
new here
after reading all the fun with this  m-d  with the NJMVC as I have 3 cars with the CC sticker . I went out and looked at the bug and saw it was overdue by a year (been too busy   f+t to get the bug out last year ) I went to the the NJMVC web site printed out the one form filled out the info put down it was a renewal with the copies of the old inspection sheets saying  "qualified" . popped everything in the mail with my check for the $10 renewal fee.
I got the card in the mail about a week or so later, now I need to big the old girl out and take her down to the lanes to get it done.

You are lucky, I ws told by a guy in the "specialty plate division" that if you miss the deadline to renew the voucher or the car isn't brought to the inspection station before the voucher expires then you are dropped from the program and you don't get another chance. If the car is sold the exemption doesn't go to the new owner either. Typical NJDMV BS!

This is keeping guys like me from getting back in the game. I dont mind committing the tons of time to restoring a bug, but dealing with that DMV mess is bad enough for my daily drivers.

Remember none of this would happen to a car that can go QQ. My Bradley has an "R" title and thats the same as a salvage title, never mind  the fact its been a kit since around 1978 or so. A salvage titled car can never be given QQ or antique tags through the state. From what I've found out theres no way to re title the car as anything but a salvaged car. If you have something 25 years or older then by all means go with the QQ tags, I doubt if they are going to mess with that category !

I need to try to get one of my Collector Tags renewed. Does anyone have the link to the NJMV Collector form that we need to complete and hand to MV? I can't find it on their website. I've got a feeling that this time around I may have a problem, because last time I renewed this car I never had it inspected. But I told the ladies that I probably would never make it to inspection till next renewal because I was tearing the car down to rebuild it. They said just hang onto your paper work and remind us when you receive your renewal forms. We'll I received them and now I'm sure the battle will begin. I'm going to MV 1st thing Saturday morning. Keep your VDubs crossed, because I know this wonderful state of ours is trying to crack down on these type tags.  kickButt

Thanks for the NJ MVC link page.

OK here's the deal. I gathered my paperwork, reg re-newal, insurance ID card, and a old "collector Car Inspection Validation page" This car has been about three years over due for my collector inspection. I went to the MVC in Runnemede and asked for the lady who knew the most about the collector car stuff. I handed her my paper work, in about 3 minutes she said go to line 8 to pay c23.  I expected to have to plead my case being that the car has never been inspected for the collector tags in over 3 years! BUT the key here is that I orginally had the car registered as "Collector Status" and as long as I  still had that 3 year old inspection voucher apperently I was still grandfathered in! WoW, and now I'm actually feeling guilty for trashing this wonderful tax burdened state.   fig2

I was worried that I would be denied to keep my collector status inspection, and if so since this car is one of my ChopTops I was affraid what my other NJ tag options would have been. I guess I could of tried QQ?   :surrender:

Well anyway now I'm Happy because I'll be on the road again.

Finally an end to this story.......

I took the Bradley down to the Cherry Hill inspection station today and it went through with no problem. Funny thing is all the inspectors were checking it out and the guy who took care of my sticker was a fellow "Motorhead", with a 64 Chevy Impala.

One thing the guy did say was that if I had brought the "Inspection report" from the last time they wouldn't ask me to drive the car a mile and then bring it back so they could verify the speedo worked. I'm putting this years report in with my very important papers so next time I can shorten the time it takes to get the sticker. Hope everybody that has to deal with this has an easy time of it, thats one less worry..now about that bad clutch tube and cable!  gifsawsall

They must be getting  better training. I was only on the phone for about 25 min. Wednesday to learn what will be required to build this V8 Vdub. I was redirected a couple of times, but that was a good thing as I was always getting closer to the end result.
At the end I was given the location in Ancora that would have to certify the car as fully operational, safe, and properly constructed. I actually spoke to a guy that might do the inspections.
Now to locate a chassis builder that is certified to build a new chassis with a serial number.
Once the car is done (2012?) and it passes, it will be a 2012 car! Emisions will match the year of the engine.(1978) I must document each major component of the car. Well I do have time on my side!

Mike,

My first experince with the "Classic Collector" sticker the state had a problem with their computer & my car so I was directed to take the car down to the Anacora station. There was 3 guys running the "special vehicle inspection station". I had no problems with those guys and actually had a great time shooting the bull with 3 car nuts. They know their stuff and are nothing like the regular slugs that run the regular inspection stations. One guy asked if I'd mind if he could drive the Bradley up the road "Just to see if the speedo worked", his boss turns to me and says " Yea and if it has a Hemi he has to see if it will burn rubber!". After about 15 minutes the guy comes back with my car yelling "I love it its like a big Go Kart". They do the "Monster Truck" inspections for altered suspension and also kit car inspection which is usually done in stages. Good luck with this one and just a suggestion have everything documented in some way you will need it!
