Title: REATTACH CLUTCH TUBE IN TUNNEL
Post by: lovebus (jack) on April 16, 2008, 05:08:23 PM
Well Bob, I wasn't sure, but I was almost right thinking the center bracket for the clutch tube was 2" from the hand brake.
I's 2-1/2" from the pin in the hand brake.

I use to cut about a 5" flap in the tunnel using a air chisel with a hook on it. I would cut from the pin in the brake handle 5 inches back and about 3/4 way down and bend the flap down to reweld the bracket, this would give me room to weld.

Now that I found this article written by John S. Henry, (thanks Matt) I won't have to go to my friends junk yard and cut open the tunnel to get the measurements and write the article.  BO**

The only thing I do differently is use a air chisel instead of a saws all. If you use a Saws All, I would shorten the blade so you can put the foot of the saw on the tunnel and not cut into anything else in the tunnel.

If anyone would like help doing this, just give me a call. I would also follow the other suggestions & procedures that John gives for doing this job. It's really not as hard as it may seem.   HOW TO FIX CLUTCH TUBE  (http://www.thebugshop.org/bsfqtube.htm)

John also has a lot of other information on his site http://www.thebugshop.org/index.htm (http://www.thebugshop.org/index.htm)

Jack,

Thanks for posting the info, it doesn't look too hard and I won't have to worry about gas lines since the tank is in the back. I have a saws all and the shortened blade trick will probably work OK.

I found some info also on the Samba here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2787220

This guy doesn't weld it but makes up a bracket I don't know how much easier this would be but I'd consider it since I can't fire up my welder in the garage ( its rented )
I won't get to this job until sometime in June so I've got some time to think about it.

Great Bob. from no way to two ways. No, its not hard and don't take to long, You can always do it over here and use my welder.

GRRRRRRRRRRR...

Ok remember its the Bradley and just sitting in that car can be a pain! I'm thinking I'll have to pull the seats and strip out the interior. I have the rugs glued down over padding  so all that will have to come up also. Once I'm done with the tube I'm planning on pulling the engine since I think the clutch is shot anyway. I'm also planning on replacing the clutch cable, and heres the big one....the gas tank! Its going to be a busy summer!
