Title: 1973 Bus
Post by: vwtrike (Rich) on June 12, 2008, 06:50:03 PM
I just bought a 1973 Bus. The body is very good. The guy I bought it from says something is wrong with one cylinder, but he is not sure why (pancake engine with a carb, not fuel injection). What I know about engine is NOTHING. I can't find anybody in my area that can look at it. Is there any shop in the clubs area that I can take it to. I printed Jack's directions on starting a photo album. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to do it.

Rich,

Real nice find!
I'd guess by the photos its got a 1.7 motor  and it also looks to have been converted to a single progressive webber carb ( either a 32/36 DFAV or DFEV ) I don't know much about busses so its just a guess.
Anyway good luck!

I'm picking the bus up tomorrow. I just got off the phone with the old owner. He says the engine runs fine until you go up hill. Then it drops to about 45 MPH because it's only running on 3 cylinders. He never checked why. He thinks it's internal. Is there a way to check it out without pulling the engine? He also said he's been running it like that.

Maybe the clutch is just slipping or what Bob said.

George will go to his house.

Could it be possible that you aren't getting any spark? What does the engine sound like? If he's been running on the engine like that and it's not making a whole lot of racket, My newbie suggestions is bad wires or a plug that isn't firing. Can valves get stuck open causing the gas to escape and not producing enough bang?!

I picked the bus up today. I can't tell if the engine is bad because the muffle has to be replaced. It started right up. I drove it around a little. I drove it on and off the trail then drove it around a little more. I didn't have a lot of time to really look it over. I did look under it. It looks good. The guy I got it from loaded it up with extra parts, but I didn't take a good look at them. It looks like he gave me all the parts for the AC unit. I've been thinking about the bus. If I feel that I don't have the time or money for it, Iwill sell it. Right now my main thing is getting the trike on the road. I guess I'll know what I'm doing with it by the next meeting. ???

WOW Rich! The Bus looks very nice.Nice find. Pay no attention to the bitter type 3 guy that is just really jealous that he's not part of the Bus Revolution! I'm sure you'll figure out the motor issue and we'll see it out at an event real soon.

CONGRATS!
Hopefully my Westy will be out of the weeds real soon.
