Title: Punch Buggy R U Ready?
Post by: Bugaru "JAY" on June 16, 2008, 08:26:13 am
I Noticed that many are stil pulling there cars together for this event. So I thought that I'd start a new topic on what you need to complete to get your VDub to PunchBuggy Day.

Here's my short list.
Finish up some welding and installing my fresh 5speed swingaxle tranny. install brake assembly etc, install engine, install new wiring harness and ECU, install rear fenders, replace rear seats. And like things aren't bad enough I'm still waiting on my new clutch assembly before I can mount the engine.

I'm not sure I'm going to be able to pull this off, but if the cars at the show the proof will be on the street. I think I can do it. And for those that don't know, this is not yor normal AC install.

Have a lot of minor things on the to do list but none that need to be done before the show. I'm just happy to have Sleeping Beauty running and on the road.
I'll do a major cleaning and a little polishing and that should do it.

71 Super Beetle Vert: Engine needs to be tested/fired-up outside the vehicle than if all goes well ... install that engine! After that ... all bets are off. This engine rebuild has been "testing" Bob & I. Send my best to "the builder" if you see him.

71 Westy Bus: Still waiting for something to happen.

In other words ... I won't be there with my own VW.
Maybe I'll show up ... not sure yet!

Old Blue has a clog somewhere between the fuel pump and a full tank of gas. And the manual gas tank shut-off is weaping, not much but, anything is too much.

I found another gas tank switch but the rubber seal is stiff and cracked. I swear it was brand new -what year was that??

The Ocelot (Dune Buggy)continues to run good for 20 seconds then starts miss-firing.m-d

I'm going to try a new distributor, cap and wires.

However, no matter what happens, I'll be there even, if the weather reports continues to predict possible scattered showeres.    %6%

I think I can make it.  Marie gets a new acl ligament in her knee on Thursday.  Which means I will only be able to bring one of the cars.   The 63rag doesn't seem to do so well with the judges so I may bring the 72 vert instead.  I haven't made up my mind on which car (unless Mike P wants to drive the 72 vert).

It also depends on how she feels, since I will be her Nurse for a few days and I doubt if she will fit into the car with a straight leg.

f**k the judges. i've seen the worst case of show judging a few years ago at this show.(incorrect cars won, judges car won in the catagory he judged and a custom bug won and he wasn't supposed to be in our group. a beautiful 65 bus lost out to a bay window with a snazzy paint job). the judging was done by the cjvws though it seems like they've gotten alot better.i'll put a car in the show and leave before they announce the results. trophies don't matter. rant over.........for now.

I agree with 50split. If you are worried about judges, you should see the heap I'm bringing in!
You think I'm not going to show her?!!! I'm just worried that they deny cars, that would just be F'd up.

*apologizes to Bridgette for calling her a heap for lack of better words*

Like scarecrow was saying- pull in and don't put the card in your window. They won't judge a car without it.

LoL Bugaru, those french fries would be lucky if they hit the floor. I'm so poor I savor ever cent of the dollar menu fries! As for the wrapper... that's another story.   ;D  Dad, why don't you just rustoloem the other parts green. at least they will be 2 diff shades of green instead of 3 different colors.  :D

Crap so I thought it would be a good day today to put in my new fuel pump....
WTF it's like not even a half an inch taller than the old one and it doesn't go in unless I pull ou the distributor. Do do I decide to tear s#$% apart days before a show!? Remembering how much a pain in the a@@ it was to take the dizzy out, I'm just going write down the numbers of the old fuel pump, and put it back in. I really have to stop fixing S@#$ that ain't broke.

I do know that the new dizzy was more difficult to operate the pump because it was harder to push on the piece that the push rod pushes up against... maybe I'll just yank the dizzy out.

WHO KNOWZ

bed time.

I have a new Generator if you want to barrow it.

Did you try a belt with the notches in it?

Did you try putting the belt on upside down?

Did you ever hear the birds sing at dawn?

is there any reason why the generator is always belt driven? why not make it gear driven off the motor

Greg. I'm sure father VDub considered all of the options. If it would have been made gear drive think about how large the gears would have to be? The Belt idea was probably the simplest yet best way to generate power while also providing adiquite engine cooling.

Yeah, It seems like all cars run on the belt system, and why does it have to run off of he engine. Why not run the generator off of the wheels. Cause the generators purpose is only to re charge the battery right?! Sorry I'm getting waaaaay off topic. I was just curious.  >:(

New generator won't work, Jack. I switched to12 volt.  I'm going to work with it this afternoon. I have a 38.5" belt on it and it's too loose. But when I put on the 38" belt, I can't strech it over the pulley.
I'm afraid if I put the belt on upside down, it will throw the belt.

I'm not sure if a notched belt will work. That will make it fit in the pulley, but our belts are V shaped. It won't work on the flywheel.

Did you ever hear the birds sing at dawn?

You've been sitting in that love bus too long haven't you? !5! !5! !5!

The notched belt will still give you more grip on the Alt.

I forgot you were 6V the 12V gen I have won't lay in the cradle correctly but it may still be better then what you have.

184 I think Raymond has a late T-3 fan housing that will accept the 12V gen. next time you pull the engine you could put it on and go back to a gen.

John. Try placing the shorter 38" belt in the oven to warm it a little before attempting to install it. It might just make it alittle more plyable to assist you in getting it over the pully. Or have you tried removing the pully from the alternator and putting it on the belt and then try installing the pully with the belt already on it?

Are you bringing this car 2 PunchBuggy? I need to get an eyeball on this thing to see how we can fabicate a better 6t5square alternator tensional.    s#r
