I've thought about this topic for awhile and am sure that I am not alone. We have all had projects which kept us busy for a period of time and then lost interest or have had to focus on other projects or issues. Now that I look back on the past I realize that a lot can be accomplished by doing things a little bit at a time, taking small steps or when time permits bite off a big chunk of the project.
What I have done is make a rough program (outline w/ details) of how I would like to finish my bug. This includes but not limited to; engine, trans, suspension, brakes(disks?), bodywork, paint, interior, etc. I kept the program simple so changes can be made without difficulty. Also I like to watch how much I can spend at one time $$$$$$$.
As to keeping the interest alive, I spend at least 1/2 hr each day doing something on the bug, even on the days that I feel crappy. Somehow working on that little green bug with the smiley face makes me feel better. I have done several 12+ hr days in a row on the bug to get it on the road. But in the end it was worth it.
I have made up 2 lists, little projects and big projects. Little projects can take about 15min to 1/2hr, ha ha ha you all know how that goes. And the big projects can take longer, complete brake job, body panel repairs, engine work, suspension, and etc.
Well that's it. A lot of you have built a lot of cars and are still doing it. So you have been through this.
Am I OK or do I just have beetlemania.
The key is as you said, doing a little something each day. I've finally started (trying) to restrict myself to one project car because when I have more I loose focus and if one sits I dont get to it and loose interest.
The other motivator for me is to spend the money, painfully, up front. Once I have an expensive pile of parts I know I have to stay on it because as a pile of parts its not worth much so I have to keep going.
My latest money pit....um I mean project....is testing that theory well, its eating through alot of funds but its keeping me motivated to get done.
Hi Jim, I have used the parts pile motivator too. That is a good approach. I will order a pile of parts and before that pile is gone will order another. Then there is always Greg's pile to pull parts from. Although lately the pile is getting low. I wonder where all that stuff went?

lol...that reminds me, I was cleaning up and found some parts you may have a need for. A new set of exhaust tips and new trim clips for all the side moldings. If you need them just give a holler and shoot by to get them.
Thats what I do, "The Parts Pile" When I sold my bug the very next day I ordered everything on my "wish list" that I could before I spent the money on something else. Some parts were for the Rat and most of the money went for the Bus parts pile.
I don't have much motivation at times but I do have what I need in the pile when I do get motivated.

I wish I could be that diciplined! My parts pile usually represents 2 or 3 projects at once and thats where I get into trouble. And then theres always the $$ problem !
I don't find I have trouble keeping interest in my cars since I've had the 72 since 94' and the Bradley since 93'. Every year something needs to be done on both of them its down to maintenance things now and an occasional headache like the clutch tube on the GT and last years brakes & tie rod fun on the 72. I admire guys that can zip through and get things done where as I'm constantly fighting to make time for my stuff and it seems like I always "run out of summer' before everything is done.
Yes the new parts pile works for me....
but also like to have 2 projects, so when I am sick of one, then work on the other.
BUt other times I get BBO (Bug-Burn-Out). Dont want to touch anything that is VW.
Shortly afterwards, I then go into VW-withdraw and head out again to work on the projects

I do only one project at a time. Did not start on my Jeep until the Rat was about 95%. Use two lists, small things that take less that two hours that I do on week nights & major stuff that I dedicate Sat & Sun to. Also use the parts pile method. No motivation problems. Wanted a garage, tools & vehicles to work on all my life. Could not afford it until I was 50 but for me it was worth the wait.
Bug-Burn-Out, I know it well. It wasnt to long ago I didnt even look at the Rat for over 3 months.
