Title: Deck Lid Stand-Offs
Post by: Beetleboi -Greg- on August 25, 2008, 01:13:15 am
I'd like to to put the deck lid stand offs on my car, but I'm afraid that chit will get wet. Is there a way to close it, or does it always stay open? I know some of you guys run around with your engines showing, didn't know if you had problems with them getting wet, or people trying to take home souvenirs.

Meh, I just read on samba that you can't close them. How come ever time I have an idea for my car, a door gets slammed in my face?  >:(

Because your trying to "fix" things that don't need fixing!

Running a stock setup you do not need the extra air flow...   Now if you had a 1776 and dual carbs, that is another story...

On a different note, what is you game plan for the new mag wheels, I saw you had the fronts on at collingswood, what is the deal with the rears??? fill me in...

Thanks,
MArc

I'm just going for the look, not for what it is ment for. I've always liked it. I have both sets of mag wheels, but I was waiting for the front tires, they were mounted Friday but one of the tires wasn't on the rim right so Im taking it back today to see if they can balance it better.

Cool!! It will look nice when they are on!!

I see. If you like it go for it, as you know my engine is exposed and I do not have any issues with it getting wet! The only waterproofing I have done was to get the plastic covers for my generator, and the rubber boots for the geberator posts.  I did run 2 winters ago with out them and had no issue, in fact I ran in a snow storm and my only issue was sputtering from the intake freezing up. eas fix if you draw your air fron by the exhaust, which I will be doing this winter... I've had ice all over and she ran fine!!!!

I just got the brackets for my fog lights, I'm going to focus on that right now. Hopefully they are far enough from the bumper guards. I'm sure my dad will find a use for them if I cannot. I need to decided if I'm going to make them functional or not, I'm probably just going to leave them disconnected unless I make my own panels next to the speedo.

Ain't necessarily so, my 1776 runs great with the deck lid shut. I never understood how stand offs really help since I'd think it could cause lots of hot air to get into the engine bay, just the thing you are trying to advoid.

I've got fogs on the super, I made the brackets out of a cheapo piece of aluminum. Just took a 1" wide rod and bent a couple of Ls out of it, painted them black and bolted them to my bumper brackets. The lights hang down from them and so far work great.

Bob, I'm going with the rally look with the fog lights in front of the trunk. I just have to remember to leave enough clearance for the trunk to open up. I bought the fog lights from a hot rod store... they asked what kind of car I drove and I wanted to lie because I felt guilty. I just went to the hardware store and bought some medal brackets 6 inches on a 45 degree angle. I think they will work if not, I'll use them or dad will use them for something else.

I used aluminum because it won't rust. I painted them with flat black and you don't even notice they are there. I tried the above the bumper trick but I couldn't get them to fit without hitting the trunk. If I drilled the bumper and mounted them right on the bumper no problem but just didn't want to make holes in the bumper. You might try to bend some stock from the flat side if you mount them like an upside L and pointing toward the front with the bottom of the L over the bumper it might work out Ok. just some thoughts..

You should.  Maybe hang a single toggle switch below the dash for the short term untill you make the part you want. Pep boys has the switch holder for like 2 bucks. also allot of headlight kits have the wiring and toggle included.  I have a toggle and a 3 toggle under the dash mount you can have for free...

extra light is never a bad thing, unless you run a generator with an electric heater that causes your gen light to come on, then your belt breaks and you don't know since your light is already on...  Go ahead and ask me how I know this...  stoned#

Two things:

     a. not everyone builds an engine like you...  :icon_cheesygrin:

     2. I would think that the lifted decklid would scoop air into the compartment from the air comming down the back of the car.

where would the "hot" air come from, besided the jokers in the club!!!!

Hmmmm........thats a lot of hot air!

I was thinking that if the lid was open at the top its going to be open at the bottom which close to the exhaust. Now moving forward might not be a problem but if you get caught in traffic for any length  of time doesn't hot air rise ( no pun intended ! - yea I know so whats holding you down ! ) think if the lid is open at the bottom isn't that a path for hot air to be circulated into the fan shroud ? It might not matter much on a Baja or kit car but on a beetle I'd think that might be an issue. just my  2CENTS

Slow is for 36 horsers.  ;D I want my car to look like it goes fast, until I have the brains and dinero to build up an engine and make it fast. It think the stand-offs will give me that look. I really want to find the air scoop that they put on the formula vees I might just get one from jc whitney and try to cut it to fit.

Greg, if you want deck lid stand offs I think I have them along with chrome springs. If you really want them & are going to install I'll dig thru my parts that are in my crawl space. I hate crawling around in the crawl space :icon_evil: Let me know

Hey did you guys know theres actually a class for 36hp VWs at the Bonneyville Salt Flats, where they set the world land speed records ?

Check the back pages of "Hot VWs" theres a records page in which every type of VW record is listed. Its in every issue.

Sorry Steve and John, easy target  :surrender: s3 :surrender: s3  T1  Scarecrow don't worry about it, I want to think about it. Plus they are like 10 bucks on Ebay. So it's not worth it to go rummaging through your crawl space lol!

  Well, I'M still waiting......................... I1t

Bob,

Raising the decklid of my super convert really helps with keeping the engine cool, BIG difference in engine temp.
I understand what you are thinking about the hot exhaust, but an inch or 2 ok, above the exhaust is not so hot & still think the majority of the air is being pulled from up above.  My  2CENTS  ..

theres gotta be a fold out hinge mechinism. or a latch with those pistons used to keep the tailgate on vans up that will allow you to open and close the off set. im ordering a set but if chit gets stollen or my car runs funky im switching back. i love the look.  :-*

I've never seen a beetle in a wind tunnel, but I'll bet the air doesn't go in the top of a deck lid with stand-offs. My guess is it would create a vacuum and draw air out.

I did see a video or photo of a bug in an air tunnel a while ago, but cannot find it now & being at w--k does not help.
I thought I remember seeing the air come right down the back of the car, so air would get into the compartment pretty well.

What I do, and I think Mike still does is have engine lid props, that opens our engine lids about 6 inches or so - at thte bottom.
I dont think air gets driven in that way at all, except here I think the air rushing around the rear of the car pulls a vacuum and pulls air out of the bottom of the engine compartment.
When air is pulled out , air must go in, so this increases the flow of air into the compartment  from the top openings by quite a lot.

did this cause converts are missing grills up top

The heat that gets created by the engine in the closed compartment now gets pulled out. Otherwise that heated air would have to go back  up through the fan and blow across the engine.  - Just kinda following the thinking Bob had about exhuast heat.
