Beetleboi's recent venture prompted this post. Top notch paint jobs cost bib d-s d-s d-s. It doesn't have to be that way.
Todays modern finishes are a pain in the a**. You need a course in chemistry to even atempt it and a clean room to boot. Some of us have had the pleasure of laying down lacquer paint jobs. It's the most forgiving "System" of painting a car. The reason John's "barn find" still shined after he washed it was because of the black lacquer paint laid down 50 years ago. If it didnt need bodywork he could have rubbed it back to the original shine. Try that with 10 year old base coat- clear coat. Aint happening
Here's the deal. I painted a 72 Maverick GM hugger Orange lacquer on a street in Philadelphia. After rubbing it out, In the shine of the paint, you could read the headline of the Philadelphia Inquirer standing the unfolded newspaper on end (Thats 2 feet deep into the shine!)
I painted the original "Blue Meanie" (http://www.sjvwc.net/coppermine/albums/userpics/69baja2.jpg)
in a driveway in Delaware County PA (Took "Best Paint" in a show) using preval aerosol sprayers!
You can spray laquer outside. The overspray is dry before it hits the ground. The final prep for any of the color coats, INCLUDING the final clear coats is wet sanding. If you get mosquitos in the wet paint, they wetsand out! If you get dust in the paint it wetsands out.
Now I am not saying that it will look as good as if you were working in a spraybooth, but to the average person the difference is negligable.
I AM saying you can get an amazing paint job, doing it your self, for under $200 bucks.
Lacquer is all but extinct because of the environmentalists. It has solvents that evaporate and go into the atmosphere :wallbash:
Duplicolor has reintroduced lacquer! It's pre-mixed, and $19 a quart! I intend to duplicate my original paint job on
Blue Meanie 2 ...BM #2? .... :icon_puke_l:.
I will document it in my blog
For anybody who wants to jump ahead... http://www.duplicolor.com/solutions/faq.html is the place.
I am so psyched about the availability of this line of finishes. Cant wait. kickAss

If they had a spray can that magically cures rust on contact and fills dents I'll be down. I'm still giving Maaco a call. If people left me alone about the paint I'd leave it as is, but not everyone is like scarecrow and I who thinks it adds character to the car. I just don't want to be another ordinary stockish yellow VW Bug. :o

Who gives a rat's a** (real rat) about what other people say about our cars? We do this for US!
We don't do this for others. We'll... rat (rat rod) owners do it to piss people off, but that's different. :icon_pirat:
Do it for YOU. When you're done it will be exactly what YOU want.

Ain't no such thing! these cars were made to "personalize". Your car is already changing from what thelast owner thought it should be to what you think it should be. Paint it, primer it or leave it to rust! Its what you want to do its your car!

QUICK Somebody call the Media! that almost NEVER happens!!
Now about that lacquer paint job, a year ago I posted how some individuals painted their cars with rustoleum and after MUCH wet sanding and polishing they manages to get a reasonable finish. Think of lacquer as similar, lots of spraying and sanding but in the end you will get a nice finish. From what I know of paint a lacquer finish won't hold up to the weather like some of the newer paints but it is easy to use and can be sanded out with just a very short drying time.Once I saw a guy paint an ElCamino with lacquer and after many coats and a ton of sanding he had one beautiful car but there is a ton of work involved so don't think its a quick fix.

I don't agree with your statement...sort-of :o Laquer won't hold up to neglect.
All of our antique furniture is finished with lacquer. If the grand parents kept it up they're beautiful...If we left 'em in the attic...they're chit.
Same deal with the car... if you take care of it, it's very durable. If you don't....eeeek... it'll start to go south in 2 seasons.

Who is that guy???!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Matt, He comes out of the woodwork every now and then.

oh pleeeeeeeease, if we do our cars for ouselves then why do we go to car shows and wait for other people to look at our cars and hope they think it is worthy of a trophy. so pleeeeeeeease do not kid yourselves if you had all the know how and or money we wanted to spend on our cars the paint job would be the first thing we would want to be the best and we would want it to beat out everyone elses paint job. we as humans just cant help ourselves, we love the glory of winning and having others drool over our cars . so get over your selves, you might sleep better thinking the way you do but in your subconscious you know it aint so joe. screwey))

The man comes alive with just a mention of paint! Spoken like a true art-tist !!!

I should have worded that a bit different, what I meant is that lacquer doesn't hold up as good as todays modern finishes, thats assuming they both get the same amount of neglect. I think todays 2 part clear coats are much harder than the old lacquer based clears. Still lacquer does give a great finish and is versatile when you think of all the great classic paint jobs guys like Barris & Roth did with only lacquer available.

I was typing when the last 2 posts came in. This thread has turned....
I'm sorry that an attempt at building confidence, instill hope and keep someone from aimlessly slopping bondo on their car has turned into a session on Freud's couch.

Hey Shawn
You have to understand Frank, he owns Franks Auto Body and lives and breathes paint fumes! The man snorts bondo but hes done some of the nicest paint work you will ever see! c23 :clipboard_50x50: (http://skins.hotbar.com/skins/mailskins/em/google_emoticons/emoti_351.gif)
I understand his thoughts, I'm a printer and I hate it when I hear about another company going "paperless" m-d m-d2 &m&

;D No worries. but it explains the agressive, competitive undertones in his post LoL
BTW Hi Frank...I'm the optimistic, overly-opinionated newbie :icon_blackeye:

Hey, this is gettin gooooood. Thanks for jumpin in Frank. Keep it goin guys. LOL LOL LOL
Great topic Shawn.

But frank does have a point. The only reason we paint our cars and continue to work on them and improve them is because we all enjoy the smiles on peoples faces when they see our rides. I think Greg probably gets alot of people looking at his car and smiling. But I think what he wants is for people to look and his car and say Wow! I want that car!

Although this thread has taken a few twists and turns from the original subject I actually enjoy reading all the opinions even if it makes me wonder if people sometimes understand (myself included) what the original subject was.
I believe Shawn was trying to tell everyone how TO SAVE MONEY on a presentable paint job, and the key word here is, presentable and how easy you can do a lacquer paint job yourself. So with that said, I will continue to take this off the original topic and into the realms of car shows etc.
We all have our reasons for going to car shows, is it to win trophies, the camaraderie of being with fellow air heads or just the pleasure of driving your VW no matter what it looks like or what people think of it, it’s your baby. I personally think it’s all of the things mentioned above to one degree or another. As long as it floats your boat that’s all that matters.
Now with that said, can we get back to the original subject?
I haven’t seen lacquer paint in spray cans or I just didn’t notice it, I’ll have to look a little closer next time and when I’m buying some spray cans of paint I'll give it a try on the Rat. I just got a can of clear to see how it will work on a small part of the paint that Frank sprayed on POS Bus. Can you buy a Qt. of lacquer to use with the Preval sprayer??? Link to Preval sprayer = http://http://www.prevalspraygun.com/ (http://www.prevalspraygun.com/) I was under the Impression that you couldn’t buy lacquer any more in paint stores, can you?. Has anyone used the preval sprayer? How long will it last and cost???

Yes...Not so much to SAVE money...but for those who have very little money to begin with.

You can't buy lacquer in paint stores anymore. Dupli Color has it's "Classic Laquer" line of aerosol cans. They also have it in Qt. cans, bvut it's premixed. Great for those who dont want to deal with mixing but of course a quart makes a quart. (When you bought a quart of lacquer in the past a quart made a gallon)
According to their website it's "reformulated". Probably means they found a legal loophole.

The quart is $19. They have red & blue in stock at my Advanced Auto Parts. They also have primer/surfacer AND Metal Flake and Flip/Flop (pearl) clear coats.
The Preval sprayers are disposable. They have whole sprayers which consist of a jar and a spray (power) unit. You can also buy just the power unit. Each will spray about 16oz. and then you throw it away.

WOW! I would try that for sure....But we can't buy Tremclad in the US. :icon_cry: Made by Rustoleum, but not the same formula. Im sure there is some reall good stuff in there like zinc-chromate or something
-
people if you want to paint your car in lacquer go to 6th and erie in philly they will sell you all the lacquer you want. and then you can paint your car with it make it look great after spending countless hours sanding and bufiing and then buffing some more. then when you have it where you want it, find a warm place to live in , where the temps stay at a coll 80 degrees so your nice paint job will not contract and expand "sort of like concrete does with the cold and heat" and make sure you keep it in the shade most of the time so yout paint job does not crack within 1 year good luck.
p.s. i do not post often but it seems when i do i can sure stirr things up huh? lol lol lol BO** BO**

Geez Frank.... What'd you do loose The Riddler to a laquer job?
-
Frank is my hero.
There are no easy ways!
-
Ya may want to read my original post again...The word EASY was never mentioned. It was about a paint job for the cost of the paint. Elbow grease is free.
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Just wanted to throw some of these so everyone understands there's no animosity here.... just a discussion

The reason I wanted to paint my car, is because sometimes I just feel like ppl look at my car and think I drove it directly out of a junkyard right to the car show. You guys all know what my car looked like when I started my project, other people don't. Like John said, I get the smiles, I just want people to want my car. No Bob it's not for sale though I will trade it for the Bradley, 72 and the Corvair. Honestly, the only way I would ever sell my car, is if I was in a terrible accident and I removed all the useable parts. It's my first bug,the car I always wanted so it's special to me. Looking at all the spots that needs just gives me a headache, if I paint it Shaun's way I still have to fill in the holes for a good turn out. I think I will turn some heads at Flanders, I've got something good going on, all I need is time. ;D
