Title: Someone please stop me...
Post by: jthw8 on September 21, 2008, 05:13:29 PM
Ok, so it seems all the cool kids around here are buying buses these days and I'm trying not to fit in so will someone else please go buy this before I do.
http://southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/848089469.html

I checked it out this morning.  Hasnt run in 4 years (hasnt been tried) but the engine turns over freely and looks very good and complete.  The camper bits are all there and in very good condition.  Interior overall is in great shape with seat covers needed up front and general cleaning required.

Some small tears in the pop up but overall good.

The body has alot of surface rust but this is a very solid bus. The doglegs are good all the outriggers are good.  There was a bad repair done on the left rear fender which should be redone ($40 for a new panel) but otherwise the body needs a good sanding and paint.

As the ad states hes asking $1000 but is VERY negotiable and Ive got him down to an almost BABE Rally price on it.

Ive got other cars on my radar but this is hard to pass up so someone go get it or Im gonna have to bring it home next weekend :)  It already has the wife seal of approval.

It's leaving for florida soon.  One of my friends down there wanted it alot more than I did so Im sending it his way.

The bus is hard to resist, but Im really looking for a big caddy or lincoln for the rally next year and have a line on a few.  I wouldnt mind the bus for the rally but my co-driver still hasnt recovered from the trip in the beetle in 07.

If we get one more bus, it'll be time to abandon ship :icon_silent:

I wouldnt want that to happen.  The wife likes T3s too but I havent found nearly as good a deal on one of those ;)

Hey once we reach critical mass on buses we can work on filling out the T3 ranks

congrats anyway!

About the bus, I'd love to have one but mrs sez "NO WAY". I'm so backed up with cars right now I'm parking my truck in the street so its not gonna happen. It would make a really good Babe car, you could save on hotel fees!

Well I have a 77 Caddy lined up I think for BABE so its unlikely Id take it, and really I would hate to abuse it like that.  I'm still thinking I'll probably do it, I've missed my camper and I'll probably never find a project this solid and this cheap again.  I just need more time/money for these projects.

Save on hotel fees...hmmm...nope I like A/C when I sleep, besides the one perk I get out of buying/building the car is the rest of the team pays for the hotels...Im not giving that up :)

Largest field of buses I've ever seen at a show, must have been 40 of them.

Pay no attention to Mr. Type 3 ... BUY THAT BUS! My project is still resting comfortably on the farm. I have every intention to get it running this winter. I'm still working out the details & money.

I have to go look at something else this afternoon.  If they reject my rediculously low offer I may have to take this bus home :)

Hey Jim- I just called my friend Shawn who has been thinking about buying a Westy Bus for some time. He just joined the SJVWC about 2 months ago. He also saw the AD on Craigslist. I told him that you looked at it and gave it a good buy review. He's going to call the owner today and take a look. I told him to BUY THAT BUS.

Just doing my part to help you get over your addiction ... is there a 12 step program for guys who buy countless used cars?

No 12 step program.  But please remove the temptation.

Here's what he's getting into.
Hasnt been started in 4 years but engine turns freely so I think it should run.  It looks bad on the surface (dirty and some surface rust) but aside from that bad patchjob on the rear fender its very solid and under the clutter the interior seems extremely nice.

Will probably need some new top seals.

The guy is hard to get with during the week, if your friend is really interested I'll hold off till sunday to give him saturday to look it over ;)

The price is VERY negotiable so dont be afraid to make an offer.

You can have him shoot me an email if he wants any more input on it.

And my wife is actually trying to talk me *into* so if my other item falls though I may go for it.

Well my little excursion tonite went very well so I'm going to have to pass on the bus.  I really want it but I have to start setting limits or I'll get nothing done.

In its place I got a little something for next year's rally

Alert the media ... another VW owner/driver with a LARGE VINTAGE AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE. Who know this would become a trend?

Congrats on the nice ride. I guess gas mileage wasn't part of your decision making process?
Does the Smart Car fit in the trunk?

I alwayse seem to vaccilate between VWs and large american autos :)

Don't even want to think about the milage.  BABE = 3000 miles round trip * 10mpg (at best) / 3 drivers = better start saving some money.
