Ran the Blue Meanie through inspection this morning. Wasn't as bad as I feared.
The emissions were pretty high. I havent tuned the motor up since I got it so I figured it would fail, but I needed a baseline.
I have the DelLorto Tuners guide so I'll start there, but if you want to throw your 2CENTS feel free.
I believe that Matt said he would adjust his carb after failing and go right back in line until they passed it. Doing that with one carb is easier than with two. When I failed for ONLY emissions I thanked my VW Angels and paid for the local guy to inspect the emissions. I was worried that if I brought it back to the state inspection, they would fail it for something else. They didn't like that the light switch at the time was in the glove box, and the wipers only worked when you turned the key slightly while it was running. ::) those problems are fixed now.

I've got 2 of em on the 72. 40mm DRLAs and if you are following the instructions in the Dellorto guide you are half way there. Remember that the 2 circuits in these carbs are the idle and main jets. from idle to around 2500 - 3000 rpm you are running on the idle jets. After that its the mains. If your venturis, emulsion tubes, air correctors are where the book says to be then all you need to do fine tune your idle and main circuits by jetting up or down depending where you are having problems. The big thing about the "dells' is the ability to run close to perfect "right out of the box". Now don't get me started about sync ing them, thats tough but doable! Also if you need parts check out a guy on e-bay who is in Italy, his screen name is alfa1750, I got most of my jets, vents emulsion tubes and air correctors from him. When they are set up right theres nothing like them! My car is running great with lots of power across the rpm band and believe it or not excellent gas mileage! As far as emissions go I have no idea, my car is QQed so I don't sweat it.
I ordered a couple of jet kits from our Italian friend....Now comes the fun part...tic toc
How did you know what to order? Did you see what is in it now and have you checked your plugs after a drive to see how they were burning, lean or rich?

Jack is right but if you followed the advice in the Delorto manual you should get a decent baseline to start with. Gabriele ( the guy in Italy ) sells lots of sizes but you could always drill a set out to the next size if you can get your hands on a set of jet drills & gauges.
Easy Jack... fig2 I ordered sets with 36-48 main/idle jets . Puttin together my own "holley jet kit" only for Dellortos. They were dirt cheap, I figured once I got the Meanie right, I'd have them if somebody needed 'em.
I don't really know what my next move is. I've always had Kadrons on my VWs.
I have the Dellorto superformance tuning manual. It has a section on emissions, but I cant do anything without the jets.
I still have to swap out the door glass which is the last thing on the failure list from the inspection center. (It had smoked one-piece door glass. I am installing clear) That will keep me busy till the jets arrive.
By then I'll have read the Dellorto book and should have some idea of what to do
I paid less than $20 for 3 sets of 8.
Personally, I would much rather farm this one out... mainly because I'm getting sick of not being able to drive the damn car.
Unfortunately, there ain't many VW loving, exotic carb specialists who also happen to be Certified Emissions Stations.
My bus passed and I have a pair of them Kadrons on it. It only passed by .100 but it passed. Now that I have adjusted them I think they would pass with flying colors. I reall like them and I may even put the other pair I have on the Volksrod.
I love my Kadrons I love my Kadrons
