Title: Floor Pans SHOULD rip like paper Right?
Post by: 3Gear on October 15, 2008, 10:09:06 AM
So, I was working on the bug yesterday, I had the seats out and the carpet out installing some foam/foil insulation to the floors. As I was kneeling on the passenger side floor pan to get into the back of the car, my knee rested on the battery tray front and rip, the floor got real soft under the folded carpet I was on... m-d &m&  So I get out and take a look, and it seems that the PO used something llike truck bed liner over the rust in the battery tray area. -55] Needless to say the metal ripped like paper...  I will be adding an new battery tray to my list of parts i need, the rest of the pan seems OK thankfully....   At least I have a new excuse to use my welder  weldface

Battery trays are easy. I would definetley pull up the carpet inside the car to make sure the rust hasn't spread further up. Rust creeps you know!

Marc,

If all looks good when you get the tray in you should throw a coat of Por-15 over everything. It will stay rust free forever! Seriously that stuff is amazing .

When you finish removing the tray (and applying por-15)...Throw one of these in.

You never have to worry about corrosion in that area again.

All of the carpet is up, and everything that even looked rust colored was sanded and painted before I put down the insulation...

I did not know about this rust since it was nice and black covered by bedliner junk that let it continue to rust unseen... m-d

Alot of people will put that bed liner crap in but it tends to trap moisture. Look under some liners of trucks and you'll see plenty of rust
