Hello every body at SJVWC! I don't know if I am posting this in the right spot, but here she goes.....
Ok well I came upon this site after along strange trip.( sorry last "dead" reference) It is a long story taudry at times but mine none the less. Ok SO this year, I had a nice chunk of refund change.....and we needed a bigger car, maybe a minivan even. SO I get to looking and happen across a bus for sale. It was like a spark of light! I never dreamed of owning one.....this goes on, so I will cut to the chase. I bought a 1974 Bus off of Ebay, the engine didn't make the ride home.. It had a 1500 beetle engine in it. (also no firewall either!) glad that I didn't blow up, I took this a a chance to rebuild it while it sat waiting for an engine.
Witch brings me to my current position, almost there.
I can't seem to get her started. I have the bently and had some family help, But I think I am missing something small
I was hopping to have it on the road before 2009, so it leaves me with two options...
I have it towed to a shop or have a super duper VW fan person stop by to tell me what is going wrong.
I can provide more details as needed. Oh and I am in Philly. S@Sm

Rockdog, you may want to check this first http://sjvwc.net/forums/index.php/topic,3309.0.html
Are you getting fuel to the carb?
Where are you in Philly?

No carbs! I am on the Atkins diet!. (sorry that was bad)
I scrapped a 77 F.I. camper, I thought I could try to convert the 74 to be Fuel injected.
and fuel is getting into the engine. I just installed a brand new pump.

Your Bus has Bosch L-Jetronic Fuel Injection. You can read up on it here: http://www.type2.com/bartnik/tech1.htm and do some of the testing procedures.
It is absolutely IMPERATIVE that you fix and seal any and ALL vacuum lines & potential leaks - especially from the rubber elbow/boot that goes from the MAF to the throttle body. I have the official VW manual for my '76 Beetle that goes over all the testing proceedures for L-jet, but if you dig around you can find everything in the manual and then some online. To perform all of the tests, you'll need a volt meter, a test light/probe, a fuel pressure gauge and patience... I1t
I gave up on L-jet (and so did previous owner) and as my sig suggests, I am converting my setup over to MegaSquirt EFI, keeping most of the original sensors and adding a few more. I'm pretty close - it was running - then wouldn't restart since the MS brain had a defect & I sent it back for repair. I sure wish I had the time to work on it!

yeah I have the bently (three to be exact!) I went through the procedures. When I did it first time, it said a bad pump. New pump and the test said a bad double relay. SO , new relay and still no start.
This is my first VW (aircooled) I think I have it right, but you never know. I put in a new wire harness, but ended up with an extra wire. I spent a couple of sleepless nights thinking about reading the wire diagrams :o
I have to wire up the rear lights...and put in the axles...and get the accelerator cable in..and

Sorry, but can't offer any help with FI,
thanks anyway...
i know things get harder with the type 4 engine aswell

Any luck with your engine starting yet?

I had some non rainy weather to work on the bus. I changed the spark plugs and wires that took me a lot longer than I expected. Number2 nearly took an hour. I also added more gas to the tank. Now at 1/2. I did get a starter to try to turn it over by my self. I didn't try to start it yet again.
I tried to find someone on craigslist to stop by and help me but no luck.
I might order the bus cover from the bus depot, I don't think it will be on the road soon.

I could stop over and check the basics out for you just to make sure they are ok but I know nothing about the FI system.
-
I would take any help I could get. BO** fig2 :icon_puke_l:
that what I am basically going over now, all the basics to make sure I am not missing something simple. the F.I. inspection is basically strait forward, but takes 4 hands! shocked
kickButt
If I get this running I will become a life member!

Great - Just be glad your not on the field taking pictures, I did that for more years
than I would like to remember. I must say I made a lot of friends on the field and at their homes.
