Just a reminder to those who volunteered to help me pull my engine and also to those who want to watch or take pictures. I will be pulling my Engine Nov 29 and Nov 30 to replace engine seals to keep what is showing in my profile pic from happening. I will be providing Coffee, Donuts pizza, and gift certificates to Gene Berg *JUST KIDDING* to those who come out.
Should be a fun and educational experience especially for those who have never pulled an engine before like me!!!
The location will be at Jack's Garage not sure what time, but probably at the crack of dawn!!
Lemme know if you can make it.
Thanks,
Greg

I'll be there

List of Chit
8 "coated" Push Rod Tubes
Push Rod Seals
Front Seal
Oil Cooler Seal
Trans to Engine Seal? Forget what its called
Valve Cover Gaskets
Engine to Body Seal Rear and Front
Most of this chit came in the engine rebuild gasket kit
4 new plugs might as well pull them out while the motor is out.
Does that seem like everything?
Jack I'll bring the chit to DQ so you can look at it, except for the body seals which I won't be getting till mid next week.

What ever happened to "stuff" ?
This younger generation.................
..no surprise I heard some 5 year olds yelling cursewords at each other in a store today.... :surrender:
maybe I'm getting old...........and crankier.
Definetely pull the plugs while the engine is out...... as easy as it gets!

stuff is for turkeys!!!
-
Greg make sure yopu have a flywheel O-Ring in the kit. It's a large black O-ring.
-
That's stuffing!
-
Greg- make sure you run your complete parts list past Jack. He'll tell you what you are missing or need.
!5!
I'm watchin you, Mr. Matt! ....@
Although I am with you on this whole Chit thing- If your going to curse go ahead and get it over with.
-
Jack there's a large red O ring. It's a little larger than the diameter of a soda can.

front seal

Those are all the gaskets that came in the bag.
-
I think it shoobie the Juan all the way on the left...Go get a soda can... :icon_cheesygrin:
...and eeewww! Are those CORK valve cover gaskets? @3# I never had good luck with those. Get some neoprene type VCGs from Napa...Unless the elder folks sk2 tell you to use the cork ones...
-
I hope that's all the stuffing I need. ;D I hate running around for last minute parts.
-
Great time to put on some shiny stuff!
-
Pick up a few quarts of earl...and an oil change kit if you don't have one...and some brake clean for when you get your greasy paws all over the flywheel...
-
Ugh, I don't like shiny stuff in my Engine compartment Shawn. I have some neoprene gaskets some where, those are just the ones that came with the kit.
-
How about ignition wires & a distributor cap.
Great time to put on some shiny stuff!
Old saying: "Chrome don't get ya home!" spoken by some one wiser than me!
-
Wires and cap are less than 4 months old, should I still get them?
-
no
-
No matter how well you plan you will alway find something you didn't count on. m-d
I have a collection of gaskets (a milk crate full) if/when you find you need something.
If i'm not there and I should be, I'm only 14 minutes away.
jt
-
Yes it's there.

Thanks Joe!!! ;D

If I don't get these dang bearings in two weeks might have to postpone the engine pull. Jack do you have Bugstuff's FAX number? They are impossible to get through over the phone. Which is why I do most of my business with Jbugs if I want the parts fast. 8)
-
I never have a problem getting them on the phone. I think they are closed on Sat, Sun & Mon. during the show season and Sun & Mon all other times. Fax number here http://sjvwc.net/tire_tech.htm
-
Jack how long do you plan on us working on the engine on Saturday and Sunday? Would it be safe to tell Blockbuster *If I get the Job back* that I can come in at 5:00?
-
Sooo... I may have a problem, I may have to sware to no requests off so I'm going to make my availablity on Weekends 5 to Close.
I really don't want to cancel this engine pull. =-/
-
If you would have got the good, spring loaded push rod tubes it would be real easy because we wouldn't have to take the exhust, heater boxes and heads off. That is a lot of work, so I would not plan on being any place by 5pm.
-
Aren't doing this in two days? I thought about getting those spring loaded push rod tubs too. Don't you still have to take the push rods out?
-
Maybe I'll have to postpone it the engine pull. :'( I'll let you guys know tomorrow what's going on.
-
ENGINE PULL is good to go, spoke to my owner and worked things out with her. Engine Pull is NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT canceled if you happened to see the post I previously posted today.
-
Jack we are trying to get a hold of some spring loaded push rod tubes for Saturday, hopefully we can get a hold of Bugstuff, if not we can get them by Friday from Mid America. I though you had said they were junk at one time? Maybe that was somebody else.

You have to take the pushrods out but you don't have to unbolt the heads

Order them from J C Whitney online today, pay like $13.00 in shipping & get 'em in 2 days.
-
Thanks for the idea Shawn but I dont trust Jcwitney with engine parts. Just going with my gut.
-
Not for this type stuff...It's internal parts like pistons & oil pumps etc. The tubes are Empi. The same thing you'll get from any of the other vendors.

-
I think I have one or two of them on my car right now!! I think my engine is a scrap pile engine everything is bent up and miss match parts.
-
I think it's better than you think. Yes it ooozes oil (http://www.emofaces.com/en/emoticons/d/dirty-emoticon.gif) BUT
It doesn't smoke
It doesnt knock or clang. (Valve noise doesn't count)
It always starts
It's reliable.
You drive it all the time without a problem... (You were cruisin at 60- 65 all the way to Englishtown without a hicup)
The way you describe her one would think you leave a trail of parts everywhere you go.
Enjoy your car...She's a good one
-
Very true Shawn, you should hear the funny noises my Corolla makes.
-
I need to know who is coming and your donut/pizza preference unless you want me to get regular pies and keep it simple.
So far I know these people are coming,
Jack
Jim
Me
Shawn
John
Joe
Matt
Is that right? If your name is listed and you cant make it, or you said you can make it and I forgot you let me know!
Also, I may need a runner to get the pizzas unless I can go pick it up when we go on lunch break I feel weird leaving the pizza and Jack lives in bumble so the delivery will cost mucho dinero.
-

-
I havnt had starbucks in at least 5 years. I dont believe in spending that much for something that burns your tongue and you need a builders guide when ordering. ;D

Are there directions to Jack's place somewhere? If I can break away from the shop for a little bit, I'll stop down.
-
We could use the extra hands Braidy! Also id hate to waste all the donuts pizza and coffee!

Tranny is being weird, crutching it to Jack's hopefully someone can look at it. All the gears work, but there's something wrong with the push down mechanizism for reverse. It was fine on the way to work, but leaving work today it was messed up.

I have a stock shifter if you need it...

I did try a google search (of this site) before asking and it only exists in 2 places (now that I have the address & can seach for something unique in the address like 'Tangers')
Here (http://www.sjvwc.net/south_jersey_volkswagen_member.htm) and Here (http://sjvwc.net/christmassparty.htm)
Hardly 'all over this board' c23

I cant make it m-d2 though as you know I've been planning on it.....
Pulled the radiator from my jeep yesterday, put new one in, ( 4 hr work) now one of the transmission lines is leaking real bad shocked &m&, so will have to deal with that tomorrow. I hate doing a job twice >:(
Sorry Greg!!!!!!!!! sorry. Looking forward to help doing it.
Matt
-
No problem Matt! Good luck with your radiator and trans! Im sure you'll be caught up when with how things went by the end of the weekend. Should be smooth sailing with these spring loaded pushrod tubes. ;D

by any chance did you loosen up the bolts holding the shifter down ??
-
They were tightened down when I put the "Wobble Stick" back in. Jack seems to think that the mounting plate is 180 out of place. Will be easier to see tomorrow in the light. All the gears work, except reverse you no longer have to push down and the 1,2,3,4 gears are really close together. Once you find first you are ok.
-
What happened to the trigger shifter?
-
i was pulling out of work, and it wouldn't go into second, it kept trying to go into reverse. So I crutched it home w/o a 2nd gear shifter seemed Wobbly, put in the stock shifter and that was even worse. Jack thinks that the shifter mounting plate is 180 degrees off. It will be a lot easier to see tomorrow in the daylight.

Had several decent size puddles under my car after the meeting, I'm a little worried. The push rod tubes were clean with no oil on them. I'm just hoping that the engine is sweating off the oil and grime. :'(
Time to order the 1776 long block.
-
I have to ask the dumb question... Were the puddles there before you got there?
-

Greg
don't panic!
look for the simple stuff, check the valve covers and gaskets, are they wet?
next check the sump plate and circle of bolts, did anything come loose? fall off?.
After replacing all the pushrod tubes and main seal I'd think its something simple that got over looked. Your engine isn't dumping old oil this has to be something simple, just give it a good going over.
