Title: Engine Pull 11/29/08
Post by: Beetleboi -Greg- on November 29, 2008, 06:49:44 pm
Thank you to those who helped today. Even if you didn't get your hands DIRTY thanks for coming out and visiting. Shawn looking forward to those pictures!!! At one time I think we had 9? People in Jack's garage!! Me being semi claustrophobic it was a bit much! We ended up doing a 2 day project in under 8 hours, and boy mother earth is loving me now because not a single drop of oil dripped when we fired her up! I found out that I will need to purchase new heads and I didn't have all the tin work that I thought I had. Even though we met up with Justin who was a new guy at the meeting last month and he gave me some flaps a thermostat and some tins, he asked me to make a list of what I need so he can look around. The SJVWC club really knows how to get chit done. Dad Joe and Bob were working on the trans seal and putting in the new rubbers around the engine, I was busy washing years of grime off the parts, I keep wanting to guy the guy steve but that's not his name was outside wiping the *MOSTLY* grime free parts down and drying them off, Pat was busy putting in the push rod tubs, If I could have collected your skin I would have but Jack sweeped it up. Jack, and John were the assembly crew and engine installers/removers! Shawn though he was grime free was busy taking around 200 shots through out the day. Ed McGrath and Son? were there cheering us on as well as Brady who brough over a template for a SJVWC project he's working on.

In summary, it was a great day minus some skin and lost brain cells due to cleaning fumes. With SJVWC You Never Ride Alone =-)

Thanks Guys

-Greg and Ms. Bridgette-

I just got out of bed so I better go check on my engine. :icon_pale:

I Haven’t seen an engine leaking that bad in a loooooong time Jim. Greg surely understated it when he said he had a leak.
It’s a real shame he didn’t have the tin work to go back on the engine that he was missing while we had it apart.

Make sure he checks his oil level today.

I remember telling people that I have a "major oil leak" and club members telling me that all VW's leak oil lol.  !fright! I was fully aware of how bad it was! It was just a matter of getting off from work to fix it.  :wallbash:

It's too cold outside to check anything, I'm going to wait till noon to get out of bed.  :-\  It has to be at least -20 degrees.

I just ordered them off of ebay. I will have them by the cruise, they are coming from NY. They look a lot better on the  BEETLE than the do on the minivan in the other pictures.

A VW will only leak if there is a problem with it or it's not well maintained.

Weezer's excuse is a crack in the block. (not in an area that makes a difference)

I heard that if you over fill the capacity that will mess up the seals. It leaked when I got but not as bad as it did when we brought it to Jacks, I think running it everyday just made things worse. There was a green/blue streak in a puddle by my car this morning but that could have been from previous spillage or grease and grime from underneath. I'll take a picture after work tomorrow underneath the bug,  I have no worriez.

I just finished up the Video from the engine pull....Phew. 11 minutes long, and that's the "way shortened" version.
I also finished up the members rides video.  I'm now working on the Englishtown caravan cruise and then the Cover 'em Up. Great stuff for the Christmas Party.

I was in awe at the number of folks who showed up to help Greg out. And everybody dove in and got it done! Bob was on the floor eating grease chunks for an hour digging the old engine compartment seals out, and Joe was IN the engine compartment cheiseling out the trans seal. John spear-headed the motor crew and Pat DaWelder lost about a pound of skin getting pinched by the SCAT spring loaded push rod tubes from hell! Oh and how cool was it to watch Jack take a pair of Brake Spring pliers and using the bench grinder, a vise and brute strength he turned it into a Seal Puller!

Whoever left the brake pliers at Jacks last time.... Thanks. We couldn't have got the seal out with out ya'!

Almost sounds like a party!  Shame I missed it.
Did get my jeep radiator R&R job done though. At the time, confirmed no leaks from the jeep radiator or trans lines going to the radiator.
Today my wife called me and said she is on the side of the road, tranny is dead, fluid came out, tow truck called.  m-d  d-s  m-d  d-s

I should have avoided the whole job and come over to NJ to help out.

Would have been more fun and cheaper!

Glad it turned out well for you Greg!

Theres a drip spot about the size of a dime under my engine, im just going to tell myself that it's just some old oil dripping off of the engine and its not leaking. Anyway a dime is much better than a couple large pancake size spots. Sorry to hear about your jeep, didnt she have AAA?

Is it from the downtube on the Oil Filler? It's supposed to drip from there

Ya know what...You're right. Only thing you can do is put a piece of clean cardboard under her when you park it. That always tells you where the drip comes from

I should have avoided the whole job and come over to NJ to help out.  YOU SHOULD HAVE BROUGHT THE JEEP OVER HERE AND HAD THE CREW HELP. NO LEAKS, NO ERRORS AND NO WIFE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.

Would have been more fun and cheaper! SO WHAT HAPPENED TO THE JEEP? DIDN'T TIGHTEN A LINE?

Glad it turned out well for you Greg!

I hope adjusting the carb isn't on your list.

When you adjust the clutch cable, put a pair of vice grips on the cable in front of the arm so the cable don't twist while your adjusting it.
