What are your views on counterweight cranks in a 1776? It seems like it's going to be another one of those petronics vs. points topics. Some people say that you only need a c/w crank if you are dragging, other people said a stock crank would be fine for a daily driver. What I've read is that without the c/w crank, it really beats up your case... though a c/w crank does the same thing just takes longer.
Just wanted to hear what you guys had to say, while I continue my 1776 research.
Check this out...
Any reason not to get a balance crankshaft (http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=346148&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=counterweight&start=20)

Why build something capable of more power and higher RPM and NOT add a balanced counterweighted crank? you'll just pound the case out quicker, hope you like throwing d-s d-s away ! its stupid economy and no place to save a few bucks!
VW did a great job Designing the engine and it's not unusual for the little engine that could to go 200k mi except for having a couple of valve jobs along the way if you do two simple things, keep it tuned and regular oil changes.
If you checked a stock crank for balance you would find it is balanced very well from the factory. I agrtee with Bob to a certen extent but not the need for a counterwighted crank. The not so secret, secret is, to balance the crank, rods, pistons and flywheel, the whole rotating mass for better engine longevity.
A 1776 is not what I consider a very big engine to spend the extra money on a counterweighted crank when a good balancve job will do the job, but I also know how you drive and nothing you do will help that poor engine burnrubber :icon_tongue:
Save your money, I'll let you keep up with love bus on the next cruise. LAUGH@
Ok so I picture needing th c w crank for drag racing when they are at the light and the engine is screaming.
I dont need that ha ha. Would a machine shop be able to do the balancing too? I know i have to send the case out to get the it bored out for the bigger cylinders. So all theses parts need to work as a team to power the engine efficently, balancing them togather makes them work togather better. Im probably not going with a lightened flywheel because I heard it makes it difficult to get up hills. :-[

Yea, the time you showed me a route back to 322 from a meeting, I had to make an effort to keep up with ya, you were really zooming....... I could have swore I even saw your entire bus leaning back on its frame from the acceleration! :surrender:
Hope you are not leading burnrubber caravans with us 36hp'ers W1 at the rear........
No chit Matt, for an old geezer he sure isnt afraid of the gas petal. lol lol lol lol ;D
