Title: old parts have failed (yet again...)
Post by: 3Gear on March 26, 2009, 09:45:38 AM
Well just the other day I finished installing my new stereo, amp, and speakers in my car, so I decided to take a cruise with my girl to the city to grab a Roasted Pork from Tony Luke's (the best in the city!!! cheese steaks too  just my 2CENTS )   Anyway I think my car got mad at me for listening to music and not her (typical woman)  LAUGH@  So as I am coming over the walt whitman bridge I notice she sounds a bit funny, so I turn down the tunes and my motor sounds like a bad lawn mower...  So I check the gauges and the temp and pressure are OK, so I limp home.  I get out the flash light and look around and can see nothing amiss.  I chatted with Bob yesterday and we decide that I should do a compression test, and check to make sure a rocker has not slid off or anything fun like that,  SO I pop off the right valve cover and this is what  I find:

The old adjustin screw sheared in half and worked it's way out...

I am ordering a set of 8mm elephant feet ones from CB today...   At least I did not have to pull the motor!!!!

Marc

Marc,

like we talked about yesterday, consider those parts are most likely around 30 years old and its no wonder the metal fatigue sets in. You are doing your engine a big favor by swapping those old worn out screws for the swivel foot type. They were good enough for a Porsche 911/12 they will work fine in your car and the tops of your valves will thank you!

Now before I get a ton of "they don't work & stock is best!" hate mail, notice I said "Elephant foot" and not "Captive ball". Under no circumstances use the captive ball adjusters, they suck! They have a habit of launching the ball out and its small enough to find its way down a push rod tube. Also in some applications you have to grind the bottom of the rocker arm for clearance and this just weakens it.

LAUGH@  At least it is better than bad luck!  :icon_geek:

Well, I did not order the new adjusters, I decided I would rather replace the rocker assembly with 1.25 ratio rockers.  Ugh grunt more power!!!  This way I'll know all of the valve train is new!!! Good excuse for new go a bit faster parts!!! They will go nicely with the dual carbs I'll be putting on in a few weeks...
