Title: Idiot...light
Post by: Baha (Shawn) on April 27, 2009, 04:58:31 PM
When I put the motor back in the Meanie, the Generator light stayed on after starting. At first I got mad, thinking...What Now!.

I keep a composition book nearby when ever i work on the car. I take notes, make sketches etc. I'm not sure what prompted me to check but I looked at the wiring drawing and noticed the wires on the oil pressure sender were reversed.

It didnt look like there was a polarity & it faces down so i cant see any markings, but I switched them and when I started the car the generator light went out (normally).

Shawn, I am not the mechanic most of the other guys in the club are, but from the picture I see you have a dual sending unit, like the one on my bus. One side hooks to
your idiot light the other to a oil pressure gauge.
I bought a dual sending unit and gauge. Joe (Joe's Bug Repair) hooked them both up for me
and they both work fine. I still have the single sending unit here.
Let me know if this helps.

Hey Shawn

thats weird, are you sure it was the generator and not the oil light?

Bud is right thats a VDO sender and one terminal is for the oil pressure gauge and one for the oil pressure light. Just don't see how it could affect the generator unless something was crossed up to begin with.  2CENTS

Nah...I'm good. Have fun with it. Just been extremely busy at work & haven't had time to cruise the board.

BTW Thanks Bud...Now I understand how the switch works and why the light would come on if you hooked it up backwards. It may verywell have been the oil light. I couldn't tell you which is which as far as their position on the dash goes.

I just know "red light bad" (http://images.zaazu.com/img/caveman-caveman-cave-dweller-prehistoric-smiley-emoticon-000204-large.gif)

I am a little worried  my oil light is green? I pulled the wire off and the green  light goes off

LoL Nice.

Both of my lights are red. I think it depends on the year, or if somebody switched it at one time.

Rockdog, your sender might be shot, you might be able to use the one off the bus but check with Jack. Is there enough oil in it? Not sure how the switch works, but I'm pretty sure that pulling the wire off WILL make the light go off. How is your idle? If the idle is to low *like mine was* It would appear to be on or flickering.

Just putting in my 6 cents.  2C 2C 2C I can afford it, Friday is payday!!
