Title: QQ switch - NJDMV
Post by: rich67vw on June 08, 2009, 07:36:33 pm
Not a question about a switch in the electrical system, but rather with NJDMV. The bug I may be getting is already registered and inspected as a "normal " NJ vehicle.  If I buy it, I'd like to switch it over to QQ status down at the Division of Moronic Villians to take advantage of a much lower insurance permium ( I hope).  Whats the process, and from what I gather, do I have to go through a vehicle inspection as well? Thx.

You can go online or even call NJMVC and ask them for the form. They will mail it right out to ya, and tell you that your need two photos. One from the front and one from the side view. They didn't use to keep the photos but they do now. QQ tags are $44.00 for life renewable every three years, but no cost to renew. Your need to have your car insurance ID with you before going to trenton. If you go in person vers mailing the stuff to Trenton your in and out and on the road the sameday. If you have a title in your name be sure to bring it with you for verification and proof that you own the car. If you don't have the title in your name yet you can do that in a one shop stop at our wonderful State MVC dept. It is on the 2nd floor. By the way QQ tags should only be used during daylight hours, and going or coming from events. But how much are you going to use your Bug anyway. Your milage is dictated by the amount that your insurance company allows you. My insurance is a little over $400.00 a year for three QQ cars and that's with a very high replacement value, and Zero deductable, etc. My company is one of the Best ones out there and are A+ rated. Most including Hargerty etc do not carry a A+ ratting! I can even drive my car out of the area and leave it infront of a motel etc. If anything happens to it, it would be covered 100% find that in another policy, not many offers these type coverages.   s#r

Thanks for the helpful info, folks. Sounds like my steps are:

1: Go get the car and get it home in one piece with "borrowed plates"
2: Go over to local MV and transfer title to limit my time in Trenton
3: Call up insurance co ( I thought Hargerty but I defer to you all - Suggestion?) and get insurance
4: Get -on-line form, fill out , and snap two pics of Bug.
5: Bring money for the ride up to Trenton and go get plates.
6: Celebrate at Mastoris Diner at junction of 206 and 130. This diner is the closet thing to one of our own down here.

I too have Haggerty and all seems to be well. It's only been a couple of months and I haven't needed to use the insurance ... knock wood!

*QQ tags and driving at night ... I asked friends & family that are police officers and got the same answer ... they aren't aware of any restriction about driving at night with QQ tags. So I would drive at your own risk and have your PBA/FOP card handy!

I thought the restrictions were imposed by the Ins. Co not the State?? ??? ???

na you can have all the accidents you want!  :wallbash:

I've never heard that one and I'd bet you can stand down at Fudruckers at sundown and never see anyone with a muscle car running home because its dark. I doubt if the police care very much and insurance companies well..., whats to say your not headed home from a "club event' ?

My uncle is a retired police Sargent. Generaly speaking police will not bother you unless you do something stupid or if they suspect that your QQ rig is realy a daily driver.

The Magic word here is "attending" meaning going to or coming from a car show etc. The purpose of QQ tags are ment as entertainment edcational etc. So if you just so happen to be out after dark your either returning from an event or going to one. QQ Tags are also meant as limited usage vehicals, as long as they meet the DMV 25 year and older clearence you should be good to go. But think about it guys, your only paying $44.00 for life do you really think that this wonderful most expensive TAXed State would want any of us to get a free ride?  s#r

Reguardless I run QQ tages if and when I can. hell we need to get something back for our dollars. So in short if the State approves your car for QQ tags go for it Baby! and enjoy the  drive&&  just use some caution because in the event of a misshap etc your insurance company may not be there for you if and when you need them, as they too have stipulations etc on milage, and usage.

Hey you guy's live in the wrong part of the country  LAUGH@
My Arizona tags for two years ran $35.00  Dec 2007 to Dec 2009  P#3
They are regular tags & no restrictions, that included the transfer fee, inspection,
new plate, and tags.  In Dec 09 to get the new tags for two years is $20.  BO**

To add insult to injury. My friend got stopped in southern Ca for no
front plate on his car. He asked the officer to call his shift sup,
when the sup arrived he informed the officer that Arizona only
issues one plate for the rear of the car  .///
As he drove away the boss was still yelling at the rookie  m-d   !fright!

Everything here is crazy, my regular car insurance for my 94 dodge & wifies 2003 nissan
runs around $1350 a year and thats with no collision and basic liability. Calssic insurance is a real bargan here, my 72 super, Bradley kit car & 67 Corvair is just around $600.00 pr year but you really can't daily drive any of them as restrictions are all listed in the policy.

Title: The saga of the NJDMV
Post by: rich67vw on July 15, 2009, 01:11:34 am
Step 1 - Complete!

The "friendly"  folks at the NJ DMV local office in Turnersville got me out in about 20 minutes for a title change from PA to NJ. I figured I would do that there and then deal with even more "friendly" folks in Trenton.

Thought I was going down fast when the DMV guy started staring at the old title and scratching his head trying to remember if a Beetle had two or four doors. Next stop Trenton.

Replacing all the fuel hoses this weekend, new coil is in, steering dampener, got some new rubber on it now, found a few interesting things - never saw a completely empty master cylinder before. Filled it up, checked for leaks - NONE. must have been sucked out by the Fluid Genie.

My '67 didn't have all this emission crap on it. All in favor of ripping out the evap canister, some bungled up EGR contraption sawed off below the engine tin, and the fuel vapor plastic whatever with the 20 feet of fuel vapor line on it in front of the fresh air box, say "aye".

I dont remember needing nightly doses of Advil either....

Check your floor near the Pedal cluster  and see if it is wet.
Title: Disappearing Brake Fluid
Post by: rich67vw on July 15, 2009, 12:08:04 pm
Thx Jack. Thats where the pushrod is, right? I checked that as well. nada.

Maybe the previous owner needed some cooking oil and sucked out the reservior with a baster, I dont know.  I havent seen a drop leak on my floor since I filled it up two weeks ago. Once I do my thing on the fuel lines this weekend, I'm going to tackle the brakes. Prelim investigation says I need a couple of new wheel cylinders in the rear, since the bleeders have been hacked off the back of the brake plates. Last time I did these on my REAL '67 about  a 100 years ago, I thought it took me about 2 hours on the first wheel and 15 minutes on the second. Prob do the wheel bearing repack. Guess I need new seals back there as well.

Like riding a bike...

Trying to access the Jack video on brakes, but it doesn't want to load. Must have krappy Karma today...

Check along the entire length of the brake line tube in the car,  - no hint of fluid residue?

Had mine once open up underneath the back seat.

Thx Matt, I got it this way with an empty reservior, I just cant figure out why anybody would run it down to NOTHING.  It sure doesnt appear to have a leak to me, since I have it in my garage with no trace of a leak of fluid anywhere on the floor.

I mena, a whole can of fluid went into it when I first got it.

Whatever, its all about trying to figure out the history of it...

So the only advantage of the QQ's is free renewals ever 3 years. You still have to go through emissions? =-/ Where can I scrape a Collector's Triangle off a windshield?

No emissions or any inspection on QQs.  Don't get caught daily driving it though.

Scrape it and you never get another one, they discontinued them except if you still have one keep it current and they will still renew it but once its gone its back to regular inspections.  %6%

Bob was talking about collectors.

I suppose they could deny you QQs but I've never heard of it happening.  Just make sure your photos look close to stock and they barely look at them.

The State use to just take a glance at the pics and hand them back to you, but now keeps them, I think that they electronic file them for future use. Maybe the man on the street gets a pic of your car before he pulls you over for identification.

When I went to transfer the title my BUS ... the "nice lady" at Cherry Hill DMV laughed at the photos of the Bus. She asked does it actually run? That looks really bad! Showed the photos to another nice lady and they both laughed at me and my Bus. There's a 50/50 chance that she was related to John G (our resident Bus Hater). Anyway ... back on topic ... after that ... went to Trenton and waited around for about one hour before getting my QQ tags.

So far ... so good.

Also check you wheel cylinders they my be weeping. You probably know but brake fluid has a nasty smell,  I say fill it back up and check/smell for leaks again.

I was gonna say the same thing, actually pull the drums and check the cylinders.  Pull back the rubber boot a bit, sometimes they will leak internally and can have alot of "lost" fluid in there that isnt necessarily causing a drip on the floor that you will see.
