I am thinking of putting an external oil filter on. I am looking for some pictures of how and where it mounts on the engine and the frame. I think there are a couple of different types. I don't know what the best one is. ???

The more you add to it the bigger potential for a problem.

For a stock engine I wouldn't worry about it Rich.

Rich,
Jack is right, don't waste time with the "filter pumps" they don't do much and can cause more problems than its worth. The Berg kit is a "Full flow", that is the oil is re routed from the pump to the filter and then back into the case. It filters ALL the oil 100% of the time. The filter pumps don't and can cause pressure problems and are prone to leaks. One headache with the Berg setup is you have to machine the case to accept a screw in adapter, no big deal but can be tricky. You also have to plug the outlet on your oil pump. The kit comes with everything you need plus a special oil pump cover that has a fitting to allow the oil to be diverted to the filter. One small headache is you must use a Fram HP-1 heavy duty filter as the regular filters can't handle the higher pressures of a VW pump and are prone to exploding. The Fram filters are around $10 bucks but are worth it. Next time you see my 72 remind me to show you my set up. Once you see it its no big deal.

I thank everybody. I was not looking to cause problems for myself so I'll forget about the oil filter.
I do have a small oil leak around the cover for my filter. Is the cover from Scat any better or am I wasting the money?
-
Are you talking about the 6 hole cover? As long as it's not bent id stick with the stock one. Also, just because there is oil on the cover doesn't mean that is where it is coming from!!

Some time this week i'll jack it up to see where the oil is coming from. It's not a lot of oil. I just worry a lot, sometimes for no reason. gl6

Rich,
if you are looking at the Scat billet oil sump cover forget it!
I did one on Eddies dune buggy engine and they are a major pain! you have to use longer studs and the damn thing never wants to seat right and will leak worse than a stocker. Just replace the gaskets and be sure you are using the copper washers and you should have no problems.
Hey the bike looked GREAT Sunday!! thats got to be the most fun ride around!

I'm taking your advise! I'll change the screen, no more thinking about oil filters. :icon_sunny:

Very good point Jim.
