My 1600 dp with an ae engine stamp has blown a cylinder. i have decided to do a rebuild with
the larger cylinder and make it a 1776.
Do i keep the original 34/3 carb or put on the dual 34mm solex that i picked up last summer
and have not used yet.
In everyones experience what would the difference be if everything else is stock.
thanks
marc

That's me,
have a 1776 with stock carb, & stock muffler system & 009
Stock carb is easy to maintain, just want say it works -
Runs fine, but with better carbs, would get more power, I will upgrade to better carbs someday, but not now..
Put on the duals if you can
More power than 1600 for these Pa HILLS! drive&&
- thought the cylinder holes in the block have to be made bigger............

My mechanic is taking care of it. i am going to try and get some time off so i can watch and help with the rebuild.
do you get on the highway often. i am looking for a little smoother ride on the highway. smoother meaning i can keep up with traffic.
-
My 2CENTS (oversimplification to keep it short)
Carb + Carb doesn't necessarily = Higher top speed
Single carb is fine for 60+ mph.
Adding a second carb will increase torque (bottom end) and help you get to max RPM faster, help maintain speed going up hills, but won't do much to change top end (fastest speed).
Lightening the rotating weight and ballancing moving components in the engine will give you higher top speeds.
(so will higher gear ratios in the trans, and larger tires but at a cost somewhere else in the power band)

Any engine will run on any carb but the smaller carb on a larger engine will act as a governor and your engine will be limited on how much power and RPM range it will produce.
If your goal is a smooth and powerful engine then the duals will be a better choice. Just remember "what goes in has to come out". Consider other upgrades like heads with bigger valves and a cam such as an Engle 100 or Scat C- 25. these are milder cams that allow the valves to open more and stay open a bit longer than stock this allowing the engine to "breathe better" or use that extra gas those dual carbs are pumping in. It goes without saying that you should also consider a basic header type of exhaust, this will allow the burnt gasses to exit quicker and allow the engine to breathe even better.
As others have said be sure your builder is balancing everything and you might want to take the info from this board and see what he says.

For my setup, 70 mph is no prob.

thanks guys. i was looking to keep it simple. guess i will look into a new cam and see how much that will set me back. might as well do that now.

Very well put Bob.

seems my mechanic either reads these boards or he spoke to bob and matt.
I will keep the 34/3 carb until i am ready to make all the other changes.
looks like my next day off is going to be for the show at flanders. hope to see ya all there.

Be good to see ya!

If memory serves me ... Dr. Bob & I did exactly that on my motor rebuild ... Engle 100 cam, Dual Solex Carbs, counter weighted crank, header, single quite pack muffler ... and lots of other cool stuff. Quality parts aren't cheap!
The best part of my Super Beetle Vert is that motor!

I thought maybe he was grooming another TQ
-
Not true SMART GUY!
The only reason I haven't had the Vert around is an exhaust leak that needs a new gasket. The issue ... it's going to be a very long weekend removing everything else to get to that gasket. In case you haven't noticed ... I've been busy fixing the BUS ... which has taken the time away from fixing the Vert.
That motor runs VERY WELL!

What does it mean if I write in italics?
What does it mean if I write with an underline?
How about this? What dose this mean?
I need some definitions when posting on our message boards. I would really hate to be misunderstood?
Never again will I use anything but standard text when posting. Lesson learned. Maybe I should type in low case as well?
