Title: Just throwing this out there....
Post by: Beetleboi -Greg- on October 28, 2009, 04:00:44 AM
Some time next year I thought it would be cool to have a "Weird NJ" Cruise. Now, we would only do the things that we could drive by or the things that are open to public, like Lucy the Elephant and I believe Batsto is on there as well. Going up to these buildings on private property is a bad idea.  :police: I think it would be something cool to do, and a change of our ordinary cruises to car shows, camping trips, eateries. A few years ago when I just got my license, my friends and I went to "13 Bumps Road" it was pretty cool. I'll let you research that one. Some of you folks may even be old enough  ./// to remember some of this stuff!! Let me know what you guys think, and I'll pass it on to John for the approval.

A sample list of some of the places include: Won't be going to all of these, borrowed the list off a website.

Nice list Greg!

Can you cut it down to say, maybe , the top 10?

And make 1/2 of the top ten close to home so we get more members to go.

Didn't make the list, that was from a website. Once I get a handful of people interested, I'll start my research.
Title: Re: Just throwing this out there....
Post by: 6T5 square on October 28, 2009, 08:36:44 AM
The reason for the research is to decide on one or two places to choose. I cant get people to decide on a cruise if there are 30 places to choose from.
(I'm not sure who the people are that you need to get intrested but give me the two or three sites and I'll get the people intrested)

Well we'd hit up a couple, more like a tour. 85 percent sure that Lucy will be one of them. Since we actually go inside.

If its any help I have the book "Weird NJ", there is a ton of spots and not that far
listed with good descriptions of each.

Hey living in NJ is weird enough without looking for more weirdness, just look at Trenton!  LAUGH@

First off... The Atco Ghost isn't even on your list! It's on WNJ's though.
Right around the corner from my house! It's creepy...seeing all those people going down that road to do "Ghost time".

Not sure if I can volunteer her but my daughter is a WNJ fiend and probably knows where 20 in our (SJVWC's) area are located. I'll ask her when I get home.

i can help trim the fat on that list a bit i think it is a great idea.  some of the old castles and stuff are crazy look totaly out of place for NJ.  if we are trying to hit up more then one in a day i think it would be fun if we hit a gravity hill.  there are supposed to be a couple in the area but have never been.

the acto ghost would be cool but i think for that we would loose jack unless we camped there its a little past his bed time  LAUGH@

anyway i think its a great idea greg

would even be cool to hit a couple up and end the cruise at the jersey devil camp out.

Love the idea Greg!  I agree it should be in south Jersey so we can get more participants.  Looking at your list below, a lot is in north Jersey.

The weird NJ then Jersey Devil Campout is not a bad idea... but then we gotta wait until May.  We can certainly do one before that... in fact we could do both... save one of the scarier/Pine Barrens related one for May.

Check out the Carranza Memorial - about 9 miles in the woods off 206 in Tabernacle

http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2165 (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2165)

I haven't been there in 30 years... It's in the middle of no where but has a small parking area where we could gather...

Theres a completely round house listed in the book thats located in Glendora. My folks house is 1 block away and I grew up walking past it everyday. Its weird since its made of stone and is completely round ( like a basket ball ) with a small cone shaped roof. Stuff like that is all over So. Jersey you just have to know where to look.

I was thinking Mayish. It's getting a little late in the cruise year, and we still have to organize a Christmas Cruise. Camping could be organized... I'll work on it tonight, see what I can come up with.

Isn't that the "Palace of depression" and wasn't that spot used in the movie "Eddie and the cruisers" ?

QuoteDriving past Story Book Land

they put on a great once a year car show

Quotebet if you told mark and mark the publishers about the club doing a weird nj tour they'd put it in their magazine.

saw a really good show on the History Channel they did but it was called "Weird USA" some strange stuff like a town in a salt mine that was under water and some other strange stuff. Its a good concept who knows a bunch of VWs checking out this stuff might be weird enough to be considered for their publication. Anyway a good photo opt!

Very cool stuff!!! I sometimes forget how much the garden state has!  :icon_cheers:

I was wondering if there was any interesting places to eat on the planned route?  I enjoy a break in the cruise about halfway to have a bite and chat. This is just my  2CENTS  I figured since we are going for unique places we can find somewhere cool to eat. I'm not knocking the Diner, but there are some very good spots to eat in South Jersey, and more fitting to the theme of the cruise  drive&&.

Cheers,

Scarecrow, I thought about it but we'd have to get special permission to go to the track to actually see anything. Vineland would have been my 1st choice. I was thinking about us getting into trouble and then making our club look bad. I did honestly think about checking out a track. I guess asking couldn't hurt, but I leave that up to the BOD to decide.

3 Gear, we could split up the cruise and have some meal in between. There are several good diners on Rt that we could stop at on the way to Smithville. We'd have to make prior arrangements because they are quite small.

I think you should stick with club protocol and do the above.   888 Ideas for cruises is GREAT but do your homework first.

All suggestions to John should be posted or sent to him only after you research your ideas and have a full plan instead of just throwing a lot of stuff out here.  c23

I checked out a lot of the places on that list and I only saw one so far that would be worth the trip. There isn't much to do or see at the 12 or so I checked so far.

No one is trying to rain on your parade, at least you have ideas but just look back at the posts and you can see what a jumble it turns into.

Present a plan like Brady did with maps and the whole shabang, not 50 ideas with no plans you just end up with with so much of, go here, go there, no this place or that place, it makes your head spin, and go through club protocol, whats so hard about that. Didn't we go through all this before?
