Ok, if Beet buys his Bus by this Saturday:
- I will deliver in the GlowBug to Scotland Run Park hot just out of the oven Philly Pretzels for folks to munch on during the cruise. ( If they are closed that morning, I'll substitute DunkinD plndonut donut) I can't make the full cruise as I have my nieces birthday party, but I can stop by at the park.
BUY THAT BUS!!! busicon2
-
Can't buy the bus till I have the rest of the dough, heard he is tough to track down so I'm going with the full amount instead of just the deposit. Life is never simple. If he doesn't take what he has marked I'm going to move on.
-
ok, still sounds hopeful. busicon2
I'm still bringing the pretzels... P#3
-
Have you even seen this bus in person yet?
How can you be sure that it is 'the one' ???
It's akin to getting on eHarmony or Match & seeing blurred neck-up pics from a potential date.
Ya gotta see it in person. All the karmic/magic/joo-joo/feelings in the world won't make up for a bus that needs more time, energy & $$$ than you are realistically willing to dole out. I got a good slap back into reality when I drove all the way up with a truck & trailer to northern NH with a $6k lump in my pocket to buy what looked like a real solid '68 Westy a few years back. The pics looked great. The buyer had a sentimental name, as did the town, telling me that this must be some kind of omen...
Well the virtual bubble of peace love & happiness was burst wide open when I saw just how much mud was in the body (nose was hit pretty hard), the undercarriage was rusted thru in spots, it smelled like someone pissed all over the interior, and there were ACTIVE wasp nests all over the thing. I drove it & the motor was tired, the suspension worn out & the brakes needed an overhaul. I went home with my tail between my legs and was sad about it, but not stupid enough to say to myself, "Well...you came all this way...might as well just get it" - Done that before & didn't want that experience for myself again.
So...not to piss in anyone's Cheerios, but ya gotta go look at the bus and use your LEFT brain to make the decision. Buying vehicles is a good test of whether you really use your LEFT brain to make the decision, or if you are seducing yourself again, getting caught up in fantasies...(this is how we ALL get into trouble in life...tricking ourselves)
Personally...I REALLY HOPE that this bus is the mutts nuts and that it is solid enough for you to drive & enjoy without a ton of work to make it road worthy. Be smart & love yourself enough to check it out objectively...

What he said...X10 !
Also remember you now will have two OLD CARS! I think I remember a very long thread last year about building a 1776 and some missing engine tins plus a stripped spark plug on a certain Taxi bug. Has any of this been addressed? are you ready to pour more cash into a second project ?? again I also don't want to spoil anyones favorite breakfast food but THINK!!! can you take care of the needs of 2 old cars without living in one? One last thought type 2 & 4 parts are about 2 to 3xs the cost of type 1 parts. Beet not to diss your idea but Brady is right, pick a lemmon and you are going to loose big time.

Well my first goal was to save up to buy a bus in April which will give me more money to buy a better bus. I shouldn't just jump on the first one in my price range. I also don't want to wait around to April and find out there aren't any buses left! Especially with the way the club is headed. =-) Money always burns a hole in my pocket an I almost blew 500 of it on a Surround Sound System instead of the bus!! Just gotta tell myself to be patient. No I haven't addressed the stripped plug or the missing tins, but I'll tackle that when I get there. Both of them require me pulling the engine again which I'm not looking forward to at all!

Any of that stuff could leave you sitting with a dead car that now needs an engine.... and 2 expensive projects 184

The perfect bus will show up at the perfect time for the perfect price when you are supposed to have it.
Both of them require me pulling the engine again which I'm not looking forward to at all!
Pulling the motor is easy peasy...4 bolts, 2 wires and a throttle cable. Just remember, the more times you pull the engine out of one of these things, the faster & better you get. Take the surround sound back and buy yourself a new set of heads. :icon_cheesygrin:

Maybe I should bring a box of virgin Cheerios instead of pretzels? s#r

Hey Beet. For all my talk about fate & Hot Rods Gods & stuff guiding your judgment, I got to tell you never buy a ride without checking it out. I bough the Rat off eBay & had it shipped from Florida. When the truck dropped it off I realized that I had been ripped. Paid $3,000 for a piece of chit that was worth maybe $800 on a good day. And I don't even want to think about how much money I put into it. I'll be the first one to tell you that it's for love of the car & not the money but if I used my head more than my heart I would have passed.
-
Like Ive been telling you alll along, buy one with a 1600 eng, keep looking one will pop up,It took me almost 3yrs to find mine, but I was looking for under 2 grand. You may luck out like Mike did.
-
Took me over 6 years to find Bob uh, the 55,...
and it was better than what the guy said it was! :icon_thumleft: You never know....
m
-
Jack if anything I'd buy a one with the pancake engine and when and if it blows up I'll put a 1600 in it. I really don't like the cots up top. I'd want a full bed. If I can convince some of my non VW friends to go camping, i'd like to have my own lair up top. No way I'm getting into a 50 pound cot unless it's reinforced with steel. =-)
Actually I've seen some later bays without motors, or ones that need motor rebuilds. I've thought about it. Then I'd have to find a good 1600.

thanks! but I didn't know I was lost!

:icon_eek: Half the busses out there have type 1 transplants. What wont match up?

Half the busses out there have type 1 transplants. What wont match up?
68 to 72 - type 1 upright fan shroud engine, no problem!
73 on - type 2 - 4 engine, pancake fanshroud, different tins, larger flywheel, different heating system & exhaust, 1.7, 1.8 or 2.0 cc engines, EFI
should I go on ?
-
You can have a type 1 transplant. My bus had it. Vw sold them in Europe. For the later bays, you need a large tin to cover the difference. They cost anywhere from $ 250 to $ 400 for the tin.
-
you need a large tin to cover the difference.
To cover what difference? c23
-
(http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/457873.jpg)
the type4 was bigger. the tin is hard to come by.
-
@7@ Thanks. That wont stop a transplant from working. Just keep it from dying a premature death from overheating. There's ways around that, you just cant enter it in the stock class
-
just make it a bus-a-ru and you will have no worries about power or heat, or AC for that matter :-)
-
The conversion on my bus was a leather type cover that covered the space. An exhaust leak plus oil leak did it in. But the type one does work/ fit. If you don't expect much from it, it does the job.
-

48 to 50 HP vs. 75 +
swapping a t-1 into a t-2 is a no brainer, going from a lighter vehicle to a heavier one no wonder the engine died! VW did a smart thing by upgrading to the T-2 engines. Anything can be done but going backward makes no sense..

you gave the reason last page "type 2 & 4 parts are about 2 to 3xs the cost of type 1 parts. Beet not to diss your idea but Brady is right, pick a lemmon and you are going to loose big time."
that's why people do it "cost" I could have thrown an upright in my bus, but I wanted to do it the right way.
He could even pull his bug motor and drop it in the bus,

i think once again we have strayed off topic can we get back to the part about the pretzels. i had a pretzel once in Burlington VT from a little hippy chick with a grill and it changed my life.

I guess this is what I get for sleeping 16 hours! Ok... 14. The thread is 2 pages longer and my fish on Fishville are dead! Thanks for all the info about the engine swapping. I agree with Marc about the Subaru engine, but you need money for that one. I'll try to find one with a 1600 maybe I can put my food stash up on the cot or rip it out and do something else with that space. =-) Like I said I'll even take a passenger bus, anything to keep me off of the floor in a leaky tent.
As for the pretzels, my parents use to pass this pretzel place on the way to visit my grandparents. It was just over one of the bridges on the way to PA. It was just some guy selling pretzels on the street. They were soft and moist kinda like Wawa's before they went and ruined them. I still prefer Annie Ann's Pretzels over Philadelphia Pretzel Factory's.
-
I wonder if you can swap camper tops and put the full bed in a 1600 type bus, it's not like the body's are different... ohhh boy a new project gifsawsall
-
Too much work. gifsawsall @7@
I still don't get the point of the "campers" that have that little section that allows you to stand up. Maybe there is also where the oven is. There is one of these for sale too... but it has no interior and now I can't find where I found it. I just got pictures sent to me from a email I sent out 2 weeks ago.
-
You REALLY don't want to do an engine swap. Just wait until you find the one you want. It will be FAR cheaper and easier to just pay a few more bucks for something that you can buy, register, hop in & drive/enjoy.
Not for nothing, but...All of this talking about engine swaps is not realistic. Do you REALLY want to do an engine swap? You don't even like dropping the motor on the bug - and that is CAKE!
Jack suggested that you find one with a 1600 because it is much easier for you to service & maintain. There is nothing wrong with a T4 powered bus, if it is properly maintained & all the parts are there, but they are a bit more complicated and parts aren't as easy to come by.
You DESERVE a nice bus that you can be proud of...all you need is to excercise some discipline, save up the cash and wait for the right one to come along. There is absolutely no reason that you can't have a nice bus...unless of course you have made up your mind that you are not worthy of this...
HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT???
WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO DO TO GET IT? (A-hem...2nd job)
Lots of places are hiring for the Christmas season. A 2nd job would easily help you to stack up some savings towards a decent bus.
Just a thought...
-B
-
Brady thanks, I will try to hold out the longest I can. I do want to get at least one camping trip done in a bus next year. Even it if its Flanders which is towards the end of the season. Not a fan of engine swapping and you are right, if I get one that everything is there and functional I shouldn't have to pull the motor anyway. Tyler really lucked out with his bus. I'm still amazed by it. I have picked up a 2nd job working with my friend, so that will help and it's simple work that I can do while at my other job... well probably not now since I am switch to a "normal" shift.
-
Keep giving your Dad the money to hold....no wait... give it to your mom
(she'll give it back when you need it instead of "applying it to past debts" LAUGH@ )
and keep posting. With all the eyes and ears in this group a GOOD one will turn up.
Now for the pop-top. Standing up is the THIRD reason (but it beats cramping legs from crawling in a tent)
The second reason for the pop-top is the bunk to put the kids in.
The first is as usual the genius of the German engineers. Heat rises, cool air falls. opening the flap on the top and the jalousie windows creates a natural chimney. An updraft. Warmer air rises up and out the top causing a draft (suction) pulling cooler air from the ground up. Free air conditioning!
Old houses had the same setup in the kitchens to cool the whole first floor.

Greg:
Everything eventualy will be for sale and at a good (affortable) price.
Keep your cash handy and be ready to jump on it, and jump quick.
You have the advantage of a hundred eyes in the club on the look out.
Pay a little more and get a running bus. busicon2 You will be way ahead in the short and long run.
Have patience, everything comes to he (or she) who waits and all those other asian sayings that have worked for thousands of years.

Another option:
This looks better than the other one. And the price doesn't say FIRM.
Sell the extra parts to finish the engine. The bad part is there aren't any inside pics, but he is willing to send them.
I don't know how NJ is laid out so this might be right around the corner or across the state.

beet, what is your price range?
i agree that you should pay a little more and get a running bus.
also it should matter what it looks like. you don't want no stinkin' rat bus.
there have been some nice busses around so if i know your price range it will help.
tyler did luck out on his bus but with all the eyes of the club on the lookout you should score.
they are out there, you just need to look.
did you have a chance to see the bus on 202 near flemington?
-
3500 is my estimated savings by April. No I haven't been back to NJ. Might check it out on the way home. Did you hear back from the junk yard bus?
-
Mr Greg,
Maybe you should save up for another year, and get something that is in good or better shape than what you are willing to SETTLE for now. The amount of parts cost, time, work effort going into a bus that needs work will prob outgo the cost of waiting for another year & socking the money away. Really, nothing wrong with a tent - at least you dont have to worry about it starting up in the morning! - ask Jack...... :icon_wink:

That is the very same Bus that was forsale in Winslow / CedarBrook in early Spring. Under the front Bra the nose is crushed in, the rear is also somewhat pushed in. He did have a newer nose section for the fronend. It was rear ended by the previous owner who has passed on and his son sold the Bus to the guy in Moes Town.

greg, i passed that westy in flemington this past monday again. i think it's worth checking out. again, it's on rt.202 on the south bound side. it's right next to a diner that i forgot the name of. it's parked behind what looks like a closed down ice cream stand. it's easier seeing it from the north bound side because the building is on an angle. early 70's westy w/spare tire mounted on front just like tyler's camper. it could be the one you're looking for. you can thank me later. busicon2 busicon2 busicon2

take rt. 202 towards flemington from the trenton area(off of rt. 31). before you get to the rt. 202 and rt. 31 circle you'll see the bus on the other side of the highway behind a one story building. looks to be an early 70's bus with pop top and front mounted spare.
