Ice was OK with studded snow tires (look it up youngins)
But snow? Awesome!
It was the blizzard of 78. (Feb 3rd) At 3pm there was already 16 inches of snow on the ground and I was driving the Blue Mule, my 71 Dove Blue Panel, on  I-95 just south of the airport (PHL). There were no discernible lanes on the road and for the entire trip to Edgemoor Delaware. I had full chains on and was motoring without a problem. 22 miles took almost 2 1/2 hours and the only other vehicles I saw were 2 VW Beetles, one on 291 at the airport and another on Naaman's Rd in De.

Busses because of their height don't bottom out in deep snow like Beetles do. And having the engine & trans helping to provide traction make a bus a great vehicle to drive in the snow (as far as 2wd vehicles go). And the swing-away front suspension doesn't plow-steer like a-arms do.

If it wasn't for road salt I'd drive a bus in the snow anytime.

The Great Blizzard of '78. 30.5" of snow with 20' drifts!

BTW The Blue Mule was equipped with a Ker-O-Sun heater (screwed to the floor) so I was toasty

Havn't had my VW  bus on the ice (still broke) or packed snow but driving a 40' MCI bus on it is like the Elephant in the photo.  !fright!

My bus was good in the driveway, once you have the momentum you're pretty good to go as soon as you slow down you get stuck. As far as ice... I dunno.

I'm not driving any of my VW's on snow or ice. And starting this year if thier is more than a 40% chance of rain or if its raining when it's time to leave the house for an event I'm not going >:( Not gonna drive my rigs in the rain anymore 888

Yea, if the bug bottoms out on the snow, your stuck unless you can bug-sled down it.
Studded snow tires were great! I heard you can still by them for bugs somewhere...who knows.

Mark,
what's wrong with rain? - snow I get, the salt and grit are a metal eater

I sure hope we don't have a season like last year. All that rain messed up nearly every event. What a bummer M*M. Driving my rigs in the rain is not my idea of fun 888 mmmm :icon_shaking:

My Bus is a snowcat...eats up snow like it's going outta style, truely tears it up in snow.  I think the extra weight helps a ton.  Ice... now thats a whole different issue... terrible on ice, but what car isn't???

The Blizzard of 1958 my train got stuck for a day and a half in PA, I was going home for 2 weeks leave after training at Grate Lakes Navy training base. Good thing we had heat. I didn't mind tho, I met a gal from Brooklyn that helped pass the time  (love

Did they have enough wood to keep the boilers going until they got the train out?
