OK, oil temp, cylinder head temp & oil pressure. If you could only have one which would you go with & why.
question?sign
*Well firstly a tach which you didn't list b/c with the type 4 engine... if this is for the bus it's hard to hear when it's time to shift.
2ndly I would say cylinder head temp, cause you have a dummy switch that tells you when the oil pressure is too low/high? An uneducated guess would tell me that CHT is more important to know than oil temp.
*THIS OBSERVATION IS BASED ON UNEDUCATED GUESSES*
These gauges ain't so bad either!

I just spent 20 minutes creating a great explaination only to have my computer turn off and loose it :wallbash:
So here goes AGAIN:
I assume we get to have idiot lights.
The engineers genius was that the 2 stock lights indicated oil pressure good/bad and the generator light indicated charging good/bad but more importantly it also could mean cooling system failure if you broke a belt.
That being the case, I vote OIL TEMP
Knowing oil pressure good/bad is just as good as knowing the actual pressure
Cylinder Head Temp is great but the combination of Oil Temp gauge & pressure light is just as good (unless you're running some extreme motor)
All that being said I WANT all three because the more information I have the better I feel.
Plus they look really cool at night LAUGH@
I would go with oil press, because it tells you everything, if it starts to drop you know something is wrong be it a fan belt braking efecting cooling or what ever and the cyl head temp gauges leave a lot to be desired and only reads one cyl. If you got paper sucked in and it landed on another cyl it could be to late before you knew what is wrong.
More guages = more cool factor $61$ $61$
If cash is the reason then theres one thing you guys missed. Gene Berg has a cool replacement dipstick that measures oil temps. It needs no gauge but wires directly to your oil light and if the temps get into the danger zone it will cause the light to flash. I've heard some guys hook this up to a buzzer so they have an audio warning when the temps get too high. I have one on the Super and I can tell you it reacts to oil temp problems much faster than a gauge. Your oil light still works the same. Best $30.00 you can spend.
Take a look....

ok here is a long list of gauges and info for your type 4 engine.

I forgot about that one, like Bob said, a great buy. I've been going to buy one but always forget about it. Maybe I'll remember before summer to get one for my bus.

Good read thanks :icon_thumleft:
OK made up my mind. Gene Berg oil temp rig & oil pressure. Thanks to all for the imput :icon_thumleft: Ghug Oh by the way this is for Rata2e not the Bus.

Great choice. The GB dip stick saved my butt when I was breaking in my 1776. I had a set of "K-dogs" ( Kadron dual carbs ) that were jetted to stock specs. With the new engine I began running short trips around town and on a hot day the oil light began to dance off and on. I run an oil temp gauge also but the dip stick sender alerted me to a hot oil condition before the gauge. A couple of larger jets and a bit of "tuning" got things under control. For the price I think its really a bargan and almost a necessary item that should be on most Vdubs.
I'm still trying to find a spot for my latest.

$61$ that will really help going up and down mountains banking around curves
