Title: Save you stuff... Just in case
Post by: Baha (Shawn) on July 10, 2010, 03:28:27 pm
There has been talk about having to start the site over... We may have to do it just to save Jack's sanity ;-)

If everybody would spen a little bit of time saving their own stuff, we could put the forums back together easy-peezy.

This place houses all of YOUR hard work.

If you open your blog, highlight all the posts, copy them & paste  into a word document, you can save your part of the forums on your home PC.

It will save everything, including a ton of stuff you don't want (buttons, controls etc.) , but your HOURS of typing, and copies of the photos will be saved on your computer.

If we have to start with a clean copy, you will be able to restore your pages by copying & pasting into posts in the new forums.

If we coordinate here, after we get our blogs, we can then grab our favorite parts of the boards & re-post after a wipe.

Jacks volksrod site, Johns blog & believe it or not Gregs "Bridgette" blog have 1700 posts & are responsible for 25,000 views.
These blogs are the main reason Search Engines bring people to SJVWC.net Search engines look for words. Our blogs contain thousands of VW related terms. Which is why we get so many hits. Save your stuff and let us know what other stuff you'll download so we don't do it twce.

You'll be saving a great artifact for the world.

so I just need to highlight all 43 pages and then paste them onto a word document on my hard drive? And then you'll be able to repost?

Sorry, I just want to make sure I have this right.

Correct, but YOU will be the one reposting. The idea here is if everyone chips in to restore their blogs the site can be rebuilt with good content. We can't restore from the database cause it's a mess and for us to do the cutting & pasting... cant happen. But if everybody grabs just a little... we can save the good stuff

It's not about storage space... It's about time. If all 100 contributors spend 1 hour saving their blogs, that saves Jack and I 50 hours each. (We love you folks but not enough to wrk on the site for 50 hours)

BTW I have the club drive

This might help some people if  they want to back up there posts.

Go to your PROFILE  and at the very botom you can hit  "Show the last posts of this person"  and Scroll through the pages and copy what posts u want.   It was Quick and Easy for me.   It was my posts only.  Also I dont post much:)

 Cheers
 Glen

Yeah but if you only copy the stuff where your're NOT whining, it's like 3 pages (ROFL smiley if we had one)
(kissy just kidding smiley also)

Sorry, I had to do that. (We won't copy this post for the new board.)

All kidding aside, It takes 30 seconds per page. 162 would be like 2 hours but, you're not going to save everything you've ever posted.

I expected that some people would need help. Either because of quantity or skill level. This is not a sinking ship... We've got a little time here AND there would be lots of warnings right here on this topic. If you need help, just ask either here or in a PM to me

Is it possible to rent back up servers? ( If I even understand how this site is put together and stored) A while ago at work, we looked into saving all of our data files into an off site server, owned by another company. They had multiple servers as a back up for each other. If our data was ever lost, we could retrieve 100% from them.

If this is not exactly right, then same idea.

I thought it was relatively cheap to do this....?

THIS THREAD IS DEAD.

As announced at the meeting we will be linking to the old forums for the important stuff, so no one will have to worry
