Monster Bugs
Food Network Challange
Jan 09, 2011
8:00 PM ET/PT
Four Cake Designers get in touch with their creepy, crawly side as they recreate yucky bugs using yummy cake. Each bug cake needs to be jumbo-sized - at least three feet tall - and they all have to have moving parts. These cakes will be so lifelike you might want to bring some bug spray. Just in case...
Good Luck John
I will Be Watching.
Cheers

It's ironic that the person on the show with the most mechanical ability get foiled by an electrical problem.
Should have used a VW wiper motor, That bug would have walked across the cake and dragged the table with it.
Great job John. I think You have star quality. You looked great on my TV, it's amazing what makeup will do for you. &^rofl.
The judges seem to have great respect for John.
I know that John kind of got screwed in that they originally told him that the bugs had to have a natural setting. Than after many weeks of practice and committing to his original design they switched - "Any kind of bug in any setting." Of course a fantasy setting has a big advantage.
Anyway I was blow away by Johns talent. clap2-*
Your the winner with us. ^NO1)

My eyes BUGGED out bugey-- when I saw John laying on the floor, I thought he dropped his cake or something, that was funny.
Yup, if the dam bug would have moved it was for sure first place, I didn't see what moved on the first place spider and her web wasn't there, I have to replay it.
Hay John, do you get a brake during the filming? That is a lot of work!!! Great job! &^beer&

Total fix in the voting, I tell ya...
What's with the female judge saying " That's the way things looked 250 million years ago", like she was there or something.....
John's cake probably had a jammed starter bushing somewhere, no big deal. It still is a work of art.

It looks so REAL!

I thought they did not give him enough air time compared to the others....
and also the spider that won mostly was made from pre-set pvc tubing, nice having most of the frame their before you even start. John made his cactus from scratch, sheesh, he could have brought in cardboard or foam cushions and laid green over that and there ya go, ....that women should have been discounted for all the pvc she used... pathetic.Maybe I'll write the show and complain to get John back on there. Our whole family watched and was rooting for John. Yea, John, next time you do it and have it mechanical do what Joe suggested, VW wiper motor if necessary and hook it up to a 12 volt battery.
We thought you did a great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We hated the guy with the dragonfly, ..... he whined too much!
Next time John!, next time

Thanks all
Yeah it was a trip. and no breaks. You were constantly afraid of not finishing in time.
Here's the motor story.
I had two small motors mounted to the bottom of the platform. I drilled a hole through the board to run two garage door cables. The cables went through a tube that was routed through the body. when the cables came out of the head of the bug, we coated them with modeling chocolate so they matched the legs and looked like anntenna. The bottoms of the two cables were inserted into cable splicing sleeves that I filled with epoxy and then stuck onto the stems of the motors. Got it?
Ok. I spent alot of time practicing the cake, coating it and I cant tell you how much time figuring out how to get the cables attached to the motors ( the night before the taping, I still didnt have an idea. Thats when I made a 9:50pm run to a home depot in Denver. Thats when I saw the epoxy). The one thing I didnt pay enough attention to was how to mount the motors to the base of the board to keep them from turning. I bought a transformer box for a model trainset to run the motors. When I first turned it on and turned the dial, the motors fell out of their holders. They give you 5 minutes to fix any electrical issues, so I reached under the platform and tried to re attach the motors. I reinstalled the motors as best I could. When I restarted the motors , I didnt notice that I had crossed the two cables. When I restarted the cables bound up and I smoked the motors. I was DOA.
I can tell you right now- I would do it again tommorrow. You learn alot by doing it the first time. BTW- the girl that won. It was her 7th time on the show. The other guy, Jason (blue jacket). It was his 11th!!
I hoping to get called back sometime. we'll see. Thanks again for the words of encouragement.
