I have to replace my windshield. This doesn't seem like a hard project - has anyone out there done this? Anyone have any tips?
I can get one for 150, and put it in myself. I can get one installed for 295.
Looking for advice.
Thanks,
Chris

Yes, I've done mine.
Bus windshield?
-
Yeah, a 77. I took the broken one out the other day. Nothing to it. I can only assume with the right technique, the new one would go in just as easy. I'm thinking I should repair a few small areas of the lip that the seal goes onto, but I probably could get away without doing it.

find out if the windshield company will replace it if it cracks. If you can afford it, have them install it. If you crack the first one, you'll be spending 300 any way.
where you live?
-
Bellmawr.
It would suck to crack it. I guess having someone else do it takes the guesswork out.
-
Suggest you repair the lip. Its not going to heal itself of rust.
Get a quality seal
get it nice and pliable
position the pull string in the seal
attach the seal to the window center on out
get the mixture of dawn in a spray bottle together
get your suction cups positioned on the drivers side and passengers side
then. get...
Oh, forget it, have them install it and be done with it...

American Auto Glass on Hurffville rd (rt 41) in deptford cheapest around and they do a good job. They did my 77bus (http://www.sjvwc.net/forums/index.php?topic=6188.msg44112#msg44112) after I had the lip fixed.
Cheers

Repair the lip & if it needs it, paint the dash (with satin or some other non-reflective coating).
You cant do it with the windshield in
-
I definitely gotta do small areas of the lip and repaint the dash, for sure.
Where does one go to get metal for small repairs such as the windshield lip? A metal fab shop or a sheet metal shop, or do I need to get specific stuff.
I am brand new to this, obviously.

Glenn, thanks for the tip. I will look into American Auto.

Take a peek at Jacks drawing,, there is a metal lip offered at CIP1 or BusDepot

Oh man. I have never tried to replace it but I sure have paid for several. Including my ex's 2000 Beetle, twice. $300 a pop. Both accidental of course. Threw her purse with metal clasps on the dash and crack. Then the always fun, change-the-wiper-blades-while-intoxicated-because-she-says-so incident.

Is a bus windsheild that difficult in that it may crack? - done bugs, flat and curved windshields, not a problem!
If your vehicle hasnt been torqued (hit) should go in fine....

I did my bus windshield and Michelle did their windshield.

Windshield install is easy-peasy. Tools are minimal, you just need some patience and a helper or two.
Me and Michelle did all the windows in our bus and had no problems. I say go for it and if you break one well then you just popped your cherry. We all break one at some point. Isn't that right Jack. But if your patient (and don't drop it) you won't break it. Shoot mine had a big chip in it and we still didn't break it.
The tough part is figuring out what kind of beer to drink after it's all done.
