Sorry for the title i couldn't help myself #@rofl3. so yesterday i spent most of the day cleaning and doing some electrical work on my Thing and after remembering Yucel and I took the rotor out and put it in Hooch she started right up. Feeling good about yesterdays progress and needing to move it to make room for some newly acquired tents i found that she is not road ready just yet.
I'm finding she is still a little sluggish to start but once going purrs nicely. once on the road I'm having a problem where its like she doesn't want to go. sometimes i will go just fine through all three gears then when i try to go out of first it just starts jerking and feeling like i have no power. if i let off and give it a second and try again everything is back to normal. Not that it takes much for me but I'm stumped. anyone have any ideas or could point me in the right direction?

Sounds like you need a 1776, usually fixes that problem.

Check your timing, may also be your spray jet.

Check your vac advance and it may be your spray jet thingy

how long has it sat with the same old gas in it

I cleaned the tank, blew out the lines & replaced the filter so don't look there.
However as the carb had just been rebuilt before the PO parked it for 10 years, I didn't mess with it. whistleegi
So if it were me, I'd go for the...whatever Jack says

Rebuild the carb., especially checking that the accelerator pump (spray thingy) squirts well. Clean, check and set the points, plugs, valve lash and timing. Also check for vacuum leaks at the center intake manifold boots. I have plenty more ideas but these should all be done first!

that's part of the clean out. old gas can clog everything- carb, fuel pump, fuel filter. Trace the path and find your answer, grasshopper.

Little late to add, and prob not much help, but yea, I was going to say check the carb.
When you do, do not drain the fuel out of the carb by the access plug. keep all the gas in there, do not move it around much, move it from the car to a stand as gently as possible.. Take off the top, and carefully look through the gas to the bottom of the bowl ( matches are a no-no at this point *_no**). If you see very very small fine particles you are cursed by the evil rust-dust spirit I am. ( I pour my fuel through a single layer of tissue into a used Chinese-soup plastic bowl ( yes must be Chinese) and see what fines show up, and how much. ( tea-leave-read them to see the future of my car and the amount of future work it will need =wink=
From this point, take everything apart, (don't need to do the choke most likely) if the carb is not gunked up or you do not think it is on the inside, you can use carb cleaner spray, to clean all the pieces. Blow compressed air throughout everything you can!
Replace all the rubber hoses associated with the fuel line, if they are old, inside pieces can dislodge themselves and go into the carb - if they are after the filter..( the filter is useless against the evil rust dust &(rage_by the way)
When I got my convert, the tank was so rusty, and so much rust in the lines, .. replaced the tank (2x don't ask) , and I was still rebuilding my carb 2x a week in the beginning. after years, I still have to clean the carb out about 4 times a year - I think it is the line..........
If the carb gasket looks good you can reuse it - I've reused gaskets about 10x before swapping them out.
WHEN I rebuild the car, I am going to put in a new stainless steel fuel line.....

my second thought is along with Steveo, check the diaphram on the distrib. when one of the two diaphragms went in my dual vacuum distrib, driving became a nightmare. So a quick check outside of doing the carb, is to swap out the distrib with another.

Sounds like you need a EJ22, usually fixes that problem.

Here's some clues from an old post when I had it...
Nope... Got the tank out, blew out the lines out
then later...
Put the Pertronix in an it runs like a top! Gas tank is out. Have to clean it up and re-install
So, it ran like a top with a plastic bottle & fuel hose hooked to it....
Did you "coat" the gas tank before you put it back in??? New lines??? Filter???

Re did the tank should be good there lines were all replaced. Celly and I had some probs with the carb on there and replaced it with on that we had in our spare parts bin thinking maybe I should rebuild the original and put it back on and see where we stand.

Tyler that carb we put on your thing was sitting for awhile and you really haven't driven the thing much... I would hit it with some carb cleaner and drive the thing (no pun intended). May need a rebuild but isn't aftermarket junk like the one prev on there...

Thanks to all took all of your suggestions and went through them one at a time im not sure which one fixed it but The thing is on the road and running much better. I even drove it to work the last two days and no problems at all. sse you on the road soon.

Got her running great now idle still is a bit high but I will dial that in as I enjoy the ocean air.
