... I asked George to go with me ,but he has to do hurricane prep for his place & a friends place in Cape May (understandably so.) The auction ends Sunday morning. Anyone live in this area of PA that could look at it for/with me? }sos{

Thanks...

I'm no expert, but it looks gorgeous!
(I love yellow though so I'd buy it on the spot if I could...)
-
I'll look at it, when do you want to go?
Matt lives very close to there.
-
Well considering that we're probably going to be in the middle of a hurricane on Saturday & Sunday (phooey), it looks like tomorrow evening ( Friday) would be the only time available.
-
Drivers seat is bad. The visors look a little wrinkled, otherwise it looks good.

Looking at a car at night... *_no**
Saturday morning might be OK

&^rofl ahh.. a classic!!!

make sure you check out the spare tire area. in the 2nd photo to the right of the vin plate is a round inspection cover. i believe this should be black. above the plate looks like the body color tag. that looks like it's been painted over too. if jack is with you he'll know what i'm rferring to. good luck.
p.s. saw the 71 beetle vert in stratford again today.
-
I noticed that the tag was painted over too, but wasn't aware of the inspection cover needing to be black. Would imagine that many vehicles have been repainted?
The 71 isn't for sale though, right? Or do you think it's a case of "everything has a price?"
-
some inspection covers were body color but i thought 68 were black.
i think if you talked to the owner of the 71 something could be worked out. i only talked to the mechanic.
-
Not to add to your confusion... Martins 59 ragtop is still for sale. Its perfect. Not a convertible, but the whole roof slides open.
-
Not fair... you guys know how easily I get confused! #@rofl3
Jack, I saw that bug on Ebay : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1967-VOLKSWAGEN-VW-BEETLE-RESTORED-PERFECT-CONDITION-/250879484320?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3a699521a0
What is that thing on the roof???
Matt and his brother are going to look at the one I posted this evening. Isn't that nice of them?? What a great group you VW people are! clap2-* clap2-*

It's great to keep the sun out of your eyes but it's annoying at overhead traffic lights, if you're tall, cause you can't see them

Traffic lights.. who needs em anyway... This is the land of traffic cirles... #@rofl3

that car looks like my old 67 i sold to a guy in edison especially since the color is the same. he added a bit more aftermarket stuff when he bought it.
i can't tell what's up with the fresh air heat. the outlets on the fan shroud are bypassed and the hoses go right into the firewall. the roof scoop is hideous too. walk away.
-
That car really isn't "me" anyway... Sorry Shawn, but I have to agree with the fact that the roof thing isn't so attractive 2@cent

Sorry the yellow bug did not work out, something seriously wrong with the roof and the windows, one quarter window was jammed, could not close the doors if the windows were up as they overlaid each other. Big gap between the roof seal and top of windows.... He should have disclosed that, give him a 2 for honesty,........ out of 50..... As I said to Karen, Ted and I were going over the car with a fine tooth comb, and he should have known we would have caught it, and still did not fess up until discovered later. Left at 6pm back home at 10:30 pm - guy could have saved us a trip if he mentioned that.
The rest of the car was absolutely top notch, incredible paint job, a speck of rust here and there, engine purred. Just shame about the top seals and windows. I emailed him this morn and said he should mention that in his ad. If he could fix the problems, it would be a perfect buy

Matt, I can't thank you enough for going all the way there. Obviously had I known about that MINOR problem I would have never even had you waste your time, which is what you and Ted ended up doing. I'm so sorry. I feel terrible about it.
It's a shame that the vehicle had that problem, but he'll pay the piper when someone buys it and then they take him through arbitration under the Vehicle Protection Plan. A shame he couldn't have been honest though. Makes you wonder about everything else he said then.
So I owe you guys BIG. Been &$hmmthin_+ about what to do for you two, because you really went above and beyond for me.
Back to the drawing board... I'll find something eventually. Patience and persistence pay off in the end __rolleye_ ... or so they say.. lol
-
Matt, would you say it's a door hanging problem that could be fixed or beyond fixing?
-
Wow... the green car is nice, but that price id get a VW Westy
-
Matt, would you say it's a door hanging problem that could be fixed or beyond fixing?
No Jack, the doors closed perfectly, were aligned horizontally perfectly to the body, no non-uniform gaps were noted running down the door seams. As far as I could tell, the top of the quarter glass lined up with the passenger/driver glass.
I was wondering if he had the wrong seals on the roof, :confused04:; - I know 73's better than 68's and with mine, there is a little adjustment you can make for the seals, but his were way off, you could see the inside of the car between the roof seal and window top. yet it seemed his roof frame line was level too.
I would have to take out his rear quarter panels and see what was going on with the rear quarter. I know he worked on the driver side, he said a specialized rivet at a bend point was missing which is what make it jam - could be. He said when the rivets were available, he got 7 of them but lost them in a move to his current place. I would think you could get another rivet, but he was adament you could not... there should be a work around. I also wanted to dig more into how his top was anchored, but it's not my car. The top could not compress completely when folded back - enought to put on the cover, he said if you had it outside and warmed up, the hood could be compressed more... maybe.
He did have the horse hair in the top, could hear it during the folding. I wish I could have taken things apart, that would have given me more info.
As I told Karen, if it does not sell at his reserve, she can contact him to get the things fixed, then do another check to make sure all is ok, then it would be worth buying
Of course on the way home and later, you always think, well, maybe I should have looked at it this way, or that...
-
Karen, *_no**
you dont owe me or Ted anything! That's what we are all about! 09group:

Thanks Matt.
-
Wow Matt.. I didn't realize that you and Ted brought your toolboxes! lol Since you guys know these vehicles so well and couldn't figure it out after that investigation, it must really have been a problem.
Gosh.. mere thanks just doesn't cover it *+youth . We'll see what happens with the auction.
-
Auction ended and the highest bid was $5800, FAR below his desired reserve price.....

time to negotiate...If its not the body, things can be adjusted... Swoop in and steal it whistleegi
-
do fo you think that what Matt described is something that can be fixed, and if so who would be able to fix it?
-
Ill let Matt answer for sure. But if the body seams are good then it has to be the Top and or windows.
A good top shop . Or Jack. He can fix everything. clap2-*
-
Jack, what do you think?
Paul (50split) , your opinion?
Anyone else with opinions, please feel free to share them!
-
the problem sounds fixable but let matt make that call. you are in a good position though. the rest of the car seemed good so like shawn said swoop in there and try to get it for a steal. tell him you'd go for $5000 since you know the problems and need to fix it. matt, jack?
-
I don't know about Vert tops but I know Matt has replaced one or two so I woulld trust his judgement.
May be just a bad seal, without seeing it I would just be guessing.
It never hurts to low ball him, the most he can say is no.
Or never drive it in the rain. (o;
-
Thanks, everyone. Sorry to be !beathorse*
Not sure how low I can lowball him. His reserve was 3K higher than the last closing bid. He'd listed it previously, and it no-sale'd at 8500 because it didn't meet his reserve.
Ok, we'll wait for Mr. Matt to weigh in...
-
Thanks, everyone. Sorry to be !beathorse*
Don't be... This is fun... You're not being fickle. Each of these has had a problem. This is a great thread. It will be useful for those who read it in the future (OK not really)

Oh it's easy... Mr Bug owner. You've already listed it previously...at least twice. Obviously youre reserve is too high. So bring it to about $7000 where it should be, and maybe in this horrible economy, you'll sell it.
I've already had my guy look at it and with the exception of some seriously misaligned windows and an incorrect top replacement, he was impressed with the car. Taking that into consideration, if you knock off the $1200 that the necessary repairs will cost me I will bring you $5800 in cash.
I look forward to your reply,
Sincerly,
Kevin V********
Then if he accepts, you tell the guy that your wife Karen will come pick it up with a guy from Kessel's VW
Worst think that can happen is he says no (with some explatives about you or a parent)
OK the worst thing that can happen is he reads this thread #@rofl3
-
The seller will know it's me because I've emailed & spoken with him before, so no playing "Kevin"..lol I'll try your email though, and see what he says.
He'll probably be insulted, and yes mention something about my mom and army boots , the horse I rode in on, or censor++.gif, but it's worth a shot! #@rofl3 I especially like the part about the guy from Kessel's VW :0)
Yes if he reads the thread, my evil plan ::fire:: is through.
-
Go for it...but wait till we hear from Matt
-
Yes sir, will do. ;)
