Title: SJVWC Overhaulin'
Post by: Baha (Shawn) on September 30, 2011, 10:34:52 am
Remember when we all went to Jacks and attacked his nearly finished Volksrod? That car sat for a long while because Jack felt overwhelmed. We all showed up and pitched in and got that car ready for primer in 1 day.

BeetleBoi neede to stop all the leaking in Bridgette and we decended like locust and pulled the engine, cleaned & resealed it, installed trans & body seals and reassembled all in one day.

These jobs would have taken weeks of nights & weekends for them to do.

This winter SJVWC will be doing our own version of Overhaulin' on members cars. I'm making the TajMaGarage available for the SJVWC Overhaulin' Series. Several members are already in line and we might be able to do a few more. The car owners will supply coffee & donuts & lunch (I'll supply the grille, fryer, smoker, whatever we need) We'll video the whole thing for SJVWC's Youtube page.

First up is Greg. His Cabrio is in need of a head gasket. The plan is to get the car in and pull the head replace the head gasket, water pump timing belt and the usual suspect parts. If the head needs to be decked there'll be a Part 2 the following weekend.

Second up is Dave (Daverted). Daves Convertible Sunbug has been almost done for over a year! It needs a few minor apots welded up and sanded and the fenders need to be reinstalled. The motor is already out and just needs a few things cleaned up and we'll pop it back in. We may attempt to install the new convertible top if time permits that weekend.

Third is Marc (VWNutt). Marc is a watercooled guy that wants an aircooled in the worst way. I made a deal with him and swapped the Cabriolet for that Super Beetle I had (my daughter is overjoyed!). The Super is completely dismantled. We will get the welding done ahead of time and then the Overhaulin' crew will come in and try to reassemble the Super in record time.

Jack and I will head the advance team to asses the cars and get a parts list together. We'll work with Action and the membership for anything that might come up last minute.  If you would like help with your car PM me (or Jack) and we'll see if we can get you on the list.

We'll post the dates on the calendar as soon as we nail them down. Gregs head gasket is coming up in just a few weeks

This winter's going to be a blast.

I just had to reread this again because I thought Greg needed a head gasket, not brakes. :)
Ok, so Greg is holding off doing this work, I got it.

This is a cool idea!

Planning for the 15th of October, paycheck comes on Friday the 14th which doesn't really help me much for Saturday. I'll have to see if I can figure something out. I'll let you know by Monday the 9th. Would love to take this to E-Town on the Sunday, especially since it's a huge *cough* water-cooled swap show.

We're ok if youre ready. My only concern is that if the head needs to be decked we wont be able to get back to it for 2 weeks as the club campout is the following week. Unless we do weeknights

Im OK with it... Just wanted you to be prepared

Sorry guys won't be able to make this overhaulin, I will be in North Jersey doing the Light the Night Leukemia Walk.  Best of luck and Jack time these guys, they said they can have it done in 2 hours, I am very skeptical (to say the least).

So I come home from work and somebody left me a box of parts on the steps!

Everything I needed to finish Stephs Cabbriolet! It was like Christmas! I even got a head gasket! I might need one of those in the future  :jump4jo":

Air-cooled VW is the simplest form of transportation there is. (Most motor cycles are more complicated.)

You can't expect a modern car to be as user-friendly.

The only thing simple about your Cabby is putting the top down,
It has a not-so-great, computer controlled engine in it, the windows are powered by vacuum for crying out loud,
and the only thing it has in common with it's super simple ancestors is the badge on the grille.

It will not be anywhere near as tolerant of delayed maintenance as Bridgette was.
