Title: 90 Cabriolet- Timing...Are we barking up the right tree?
Post by: Baha (Shawn) on October 05, 2011, 10:09:23 PM
OK Great and Wise VW Gurus... Do we have something here????

When I looked at this car (before Marc bought it) the PO told me
"I just cant get it running right, and Im tired of messing with it."

So Marc and I went hunting. We highlighted all the timing marks.

Then we brought the #1 piston to TDC

Are we crazy??? Or is the cam way out of whack?

I think we need to consult the Bible Bentely

It looks as though the engine was on # 3 instead of # 1 when they lined up the marks. To confirm this rotate to # three and see if the marks line up correctly. If this is the case you know why it runs bad but close enough to run!

Thank you Bob.

Well I guess we know why it drove him crazy.

So, technically I can take the belt off, move the cam, put the belt on (without moving anything of course) and it should be good.

I mean we need to rotate twice manually to make sure there's no "clearance" issues and also to make sure the marks do what they're supposed to

Right?

Correct! On all points. Just make sure you are on # 1 TDC. Should be easy peasy. Good luck!

Right... Remind me when you get there that we spun the intermediate shaft, so the distributor is probably off now  ?/banghea?/

So it runs a lot better than it did, looks like the timing was off by about 90*?

Now we have to work on setting the air fuel mixture and she should be 100%
