Title: Gas mileage
Post by: kvbug (karen) on September 26, 2012, 05:52:09 pm
Just wondering how much your stock bug uses?  My trip to the car show was about 85 or 86 miles round trip and Sophias gauge now reads 1/2, and had been full when I started out.  Perhaps my gauge is off?

Take your car to a gas station and fill up your tank. Write down the exact mileage found on your odometer reading.
Drive around like you normally would until your car needs refueling.
Fill up your tank again, and this time, record how many gallons it takes. You can find this number on the gas pump.

Check your odometer reading again and write down the new number
Subtract the first odometer reading from the second one. This will tell you how many miles you've driven.
Divide this number by the number of gallons it took to fill your car. The resulting number is your car's current miles per gallon.1
300 miles driven/15 gallons of gas=20 miles per gallon

I would do at least 3 fillups.

Wow, that's some formula!  Thanks Jack, I'll try it.  May take me a year considering how little I drive the car though..  #@rofl3

I use a App called road trip and you can add all the info in quickly and it will keep track of it. There are a few different ones out there.

Remember, you only have a 10 gallon tank.

While you are doing your indepth mileage study, here's an educated guess...

If you used a half tank (5 gallons) to go 85 miles you're doing 17mpg +-.

Cant wait to see how close I am.

If that's the case,  that's not very good for a bug is it?

i tracked my trip to Bonnaroo in the Bus and i was getting between 18 to 23 mpg depending on if i was on flat highway or mountains and hills.

there are a ton of apps out there im sure you can find one for the droid.  if not shwans math is sound but i would use a note pad and keep track of the amount you fill to do your math rather then trust your gauge to be 100% accurate.

In the '70s I drove a '53 Oval with a rebuilt 36 horse motor. The best way to drive it was pedal to metal shift and repeat. It would only did 60 MPH but, it got 40 MPG without even trying! I should have one now with gas being 367/gal. &(rage_

yea, do the fill-ups  3x  as Jack said, ( Hmmm , that could take a few years tho')..........

be interesting to do a compression test on the thing...( good news is the spark plugs in your car  looked good - I had to avoid saying your spark.....   - you know how  this group is !)  you should be getting better gas mileage than what it appears...

Well first I have to wait for the clamps and pea shooters to come in and get installed , and the beauty trim rings before I can even think of driving her.. so yes it could take a few years..  #@rofl3
