So I'm still working on the 60 beetle. I'm getting close to start work on the floor pan. I have the original pan, but I also have one from a 1974. I have been thinking of dropping the body on the newer pan (ball joint 12 Volt IRS trans). I'm using a 1500 single port for the build. Will the body fit, rear wheels clear fenders? What do u guys think. I want it to be a dependable driver
-
Yes it can be done and it's not that hard as I recall.
In old issues of Hot VW's - then called DUNE BUGGIES AND HOT VW'S there were a couple of how to do it
I'll look through my collection, but I have hundreds and it could be anywhere.

I think I remember the only difference is the rear body mounts. Something has to be cut or altered. Lots of people have done it. Search on the Samba for your year model in the forums section. %$oldcit

do you think its worth doing?
-
Opinions are like a-- h----, everybody has one. I like swing axles because I am old school. On the other hand CV joint suspension handles much better! %$oldcit

The swing axle I have also scares me. When we were pushing it around the driveway it was making a pretty loud clicking noise in neutral. Still trying to find the thread on the samba

Your in Luck!!! :jump4jo":
I found my so rare; 1988 ANNUAL copy of Hot VW's "HOW TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR VW"
This is a very desirable addition as it also details How To Chop A Top among its other features.
I'll bring it to the meeting and perhaps it will help you to decide.

Why do you always eliminate things that "scare you"? :confused04:;
Learn them, fix them...Don't be so quick to dispose of what you do not understand (http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/yoda.gif)

I'm scared about the price of a swing axle trans.
Hey Joe thanks for finding that!
-
Couple hundred bucks... easy peasy
Besides "All Motor" Matt Steedle is right here in Atco. Transmission genius thumpup)-
-
Not to worry! I still have a couple of swing axles laying around. %$oldcit

Ant.
The clicking aka as Clucking noise your hearing is usually a chipped Folcum Plate <= spelling? at the trans side of the Swingaxle. They consist of two half round pieces of metal that permits the axel to swivel. The older plates were just polished smoothed metal, but the newer ones. sold by Weddle Industries now have groves in them to help hold and lubricate the Paddle side of the swingaxle.
BTW. I just gave several-aaaa axels to Matt Steetle and last I at was at his place he had several dozen trans on hand. Both swing and IRS.
Or he can do a quick build Freeway Flyer, gearing etc of your choice. He has most parts on hand. He's very reasonable on his prices. And is actually the guy who builds the VW boxes for Savage, Rusty Wagen, etc, etc. He also does Honda, and Vette Race Boxes including the new Vetts, and many other Race stuff so knows his chit.

To switch from Swingaxle to IRS. Your need a pair of IRS rear axle arms, IRS axles, and fabricate or buy some IRS adapter mounts. I believe that Pete at Airkewld world has them. Here's Pete's link. http://www.airkewld.com
Yes, it can be done but welding and lining up the mounts are key..
Or.... Just swap the Pan to the IRS Pan like you mentioned, as most of the parts needed will already be on the IRS Pan.
Plus your never need to worry about a bent wheelCock. #banghead

Guess you will be adopting the 74 seat style then, so you'll need those seats..... unless you do a bit more work.........
-
Ok. After much research. I'm pulling the body off the 74 tonight. Only thing i have to change is rear body mounts and it will be 4 lug.
-
Not for nothing....5 lug is cooler

I think I have one you can have, don't know its condition, I'll check on it Monday.,
Oh, There is no mystery about fixing them.
