If they are the same thing I read about in VW Trends back in the 90's they are used in Switzerland I think? For snow rescues. I don't remember but I think they were also built there too.
The entire drivetrain is flipped to the front. I remember seeing a picture of the inside and the gear pattern was even upside down.
