Personally I feel that the upper bunk is mostly intended towards the young'ems. But I do have a Few customers "Retired Folk" who sleep in the upper bunk. Guess there letting the child within sleep in the tree fort. One has the foldup ladder sold by GoWesty, but it's a tuff item to store when not in use, and a obstacle to move around when in use. These Campers get tight inside so the more gadgets such as ladders, steps etc are more obstacles to store or maneuver about.
The upper Bunk and access to it has been a question on many forums about how VW intended campers to use and access it. There is no mention of access to it in user manuals etc. Guess VW thought that campers were going to craw through the skylight on models so equipped.
The upper Bunk is also not the most comfortable sleeping location unless you like a very firm mattress, as it has a thin mattress pad. While installing replacement Tents on Poptops I spend enough time up there, and theres not much air circulation unless you have the newer 3 window tent, and on a warm day/evening it can get down right warm on the upper level. So trust me it's not as romantic as one may think.
But if you prefer a firm flat mattress it may be the right choice for your personal preference.
But regardless campers do sleep up there.
The common means to access the upper Bunk is
1# to close your Sink/stove counter top
2# Step on the pedestal behind the drivers seat
3# Step up on the Counter Top *Note Try to keep your weight towards the edge of the counter top and not center
4# Move your body onto the upper Bunk..
Coming down is the reverse process.
But with all that said the Upper Bunk is a Handy additional sleeping quarters, but most useful as additional head clearance space, and a great storage location to store your camping gear while setup on location or a combination of both with one person sleeping on the upper level.
Kids Love it up there and quickly adopt it as there little shelter. Just use caution with the upper Bunk if trying to exit it during the night there are more then a few horror stories of injuries from campers miss steps exiting the upper level.
B Safe.
