-
We gutted the Champagne last night... Prepping for its "Weekender" interior
-
((thumpup
-
Awesome. I want to pull my interior and build something custom to better suit my needs. I have never used the sink or stove and dont plan to. Thinking of gutting it all but the back seat and rebuilding everything so i can store more.
and maybe to house a sweet mobile computer.
-
Shame I live on the other side of the tracks! bawlin)0
-
Anything doing at the Taj tomorrow night.
-
Yup we'll be there... But it looks like a bomb went off in there #banghead
We gutted the Champagne. Found some mouse hotels (long since vacated)... So we had to disinfect
Tomorrow will be rust treatment in the interior,
jalousie install
Starter install (Motor still out).
Emergency brake cable adjust.
Fuel tank cover reinstall
We could finish putting the motor and stick it in... It wouldn't take much
Tyler, bring hooch over... We'll yank the interior and put it in the Champagne... Then I'll build you a new one thumpup)-
Craftsman tool chest for storage, mobile server and dash mounted monitor included... *8emperor

Ah no one knows how to spark my interest just before concert season like you shawn. Let me ponder that offer while i sip my morning brew.
-
if you think about it i would be helping a fellow club member and getting something in return hmmmmmm. what to do. what to do.
-
Still on for tonight?
-
WOW! What a great time we had. Richard, 3Gear, Greg, Tyler, Steph and I got everything on the list done and then some under the watchful eye of Jack. *snoopy)
Its awesome to have help and somebody to bounce ideas off of. Without Richard & 3Gear we never would have figured out the mis-alignment of the pulleys =+grouphu9
Greg and Steph got the jalousie windows all cleaned up
Greg showed me how to put the Jalousie window in and I showed him how to keep it there with some sheet metal screws #@rofl3
Starter is in, motor is 99% done
-
We're going to attempt to install the Champagne's engine tonight. If you're looking for something to do, c'mon over
-
Got to cancel tonight. Water in the basement &(rage_
-
Thanks to Celly & George last night there is still a chance that Steph can take Argyle (the Champagne) to the Camp Jam in the Pines (CJiP) Music Festival tomorrow
So PTatT will include tying up the loose ends, like the tail lights and a few other items.
Then the test drive
If you're bored, c'mon over (6:00 PM)
-
OK... Nevermind. #banghead
Tracy loaned LoveBus to the kids so I'll be driving it to Buena this evening
So I won't be there.
-
awww but i thought this was going to be Uncle Argyle's first show. (not sure why but i feel its an uncle)
-
Well... Uncle argyle is a girl... and I had named her... Steph calls her "Paisley"
-
Sorry I havent posted anything from the Tuesday & Thursday nights... Been up to my eyeballs in VW stuff. I have a TON of stuff to post and I promise to do it soon.
In the meantime tomorrow (Tuesday 5/27) Tyler is going solar... Eeyore is getting an oil change and who knows who else will show up to "get sumpin' done". If you're bored and looking for something to do c'mon over!

-
Heres a prieview of what we did in one night!
So last night at the garage we knocked some of the items off my list and added some new ones #banghead.
3Gear and i got all the VAC lines replaced with German Supply's kit. This did not come with a boot so that will be replaced when it comes in from bus depot.
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a533/tmarshall12/2_zps9f16c9a0.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/tmarshall12/media/2_zps9f16c9a0.jpg.html)
We then fixed / cleaned up some wiring for the head unit. while Shawn worked his magic on the Awning. Then to round out the night we put in a set of Jack Bombay's Pop Top Shocks ... Say that ten times fast... I'll wait.... did you make it past 2 times? This things are great with one on it was enough to push the top up with one finger with both on i just unlock the top and it slowly rises on its own. This will be great once i have my roof rack back on.
(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a533/tmarshall12/1_zpsd0aa5153.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/tmarshall12/media/1_zpsd0aa5153.jpg.html)
So now that we covered the good we go to the bad. apparently i have a problem with one of my house batteries and for some reason i have no reverse lights which is in turn keeping my reverse camera from working. I think as a quick fix today I'm going to tie power into it with a switch so i can turn it on whenever i want.
I'm also still having something weird going on with the head unit. it keeps powering down on its own and i have not figured out why yet. originally it we thought this was because of the battery however not I'm not so sure so today i will be surfing the net to hopefully find a solution. other then that it worked great on the Way to Shawn's yesterday. i took a phone call while driving and had a crystal clear hands fee conversation while trucking down the road. this deff will be an awesome addition once i get all the bugs worked out. thumpup)-
-
going to grab a new battery at Advanced on my way over tonight then its time to play with a solar panel kit.
-
Poop, wish I could come tonight to measure up the poptop. Stupid double date.
-
Engaged means no more "dating"... :confused04:;
-
Got the solar panel on last night. Thanks again Shawn and George i couldn't of done it without your help.

You would try a call to RIMCO in Cal. http://www.rimcovw.com/home/services/ They have the name in So. Cal for preparing motors for the top racers.
I know they weld cases to increase durability. Not sure they will repair cracked cases.
This is on of the few shops I would trust to weld on a VW case.
It's a tricky operation requiring annealing before and after the welding process. If done improperly can result in making the metal brittle and subjected to even more cracking.
-
Here are some examples of Rimco's welding. I'm impressed.

It was never a real race motor. Just a quick 1641
Bob herbie hooked me up with a long block so I can just put tins back on and shove it back in the car.
Jack I talked to Shawn, the crack block we can still take apart someday so u can teach us how to do a split block main bearings and stuff. Do it with the club? Never did one (successfully)
Shawn had the wrong injectors didn't get anything done tonight.
-
Shawns had the wrong injectors didn't get anything done tonight.
-
Well I learned about VW specific tools that Shawn has so I wouldn't call it a waste of a night
-
But we discovered shawns tag. That saved the night.

Hey, what happens in the Taj stays in the Taj.....

The tag made my night. Good thing I stopped over haha lol

Thanks to Ant, Richard,Greg for the help and to Zach for showing up with Dunkin Donuts coffee!
As Tracy mentioned it turned out that they sent the wrong injectors. Not by much, but about 3/32 short #banghead
Picking up another set on the way home tomorrow so hopefully we'll get it going tomorrow night.
So Thursday night playtime at the Taj is on!

If I can get away again, I'll be there. I'll let you know tomorrow.

Shawn and I worked on engines for 12 hours on Saturday. Broke down the busted block then assembled new one. Put heads on all the tins George checked end play I broke some stuff. Shawn fixed some stuff. All was good. Jack came over today test fired it. Sounded good. Idle not so much. Came home put it in the car. Test drove it needs fine tuning but it runs and it's back in the car! Also Shawn drove the white vanagon around the block. We bled the brakes twice runs nice

That's good news! Although it would be puzzling why the FAPWagen would have a problem ejecting fluid from a hose, let alone twice
-
All kidding aside. We got the brakes to a point where they stop nicely. The last step is to figure why the signals coming from the engine are getting scrambled up at the cluster... The high pressure oil warning comes on at 2500 rpm even thought the sender is sending a signal that says the oil pressure is fine.
The coolant level indicator is blinking even though the sender is new and the level is fine. These are probably a ground or a bad connection... We shall see
Have to source a new radiator fan. The current unit works but "she don't sound so good Lucy "
Other than that, we're golden

Talked my girls into Family VW Night once a week. Steph has a goofy work schedule so the night won't be constant...So this Wednesday is the first. We're working on all three busses. As always, if you're bored and want to come play feel free. Nothing better than working on VWs with family and friends. We'll be grinding, and treating rust, welding, electrical and the cool electronics I love putting in my vehicles so it's going to be a real learning experience.

What's up first

All of them... The girls cant weld so they'll start on the rust on Jessie's Westy while I tackle the "roller coaster" on the back of Stephs Champagne. Lovebus needs a left front adjuster, if I can get to it

We're hopping here all weekend! Richards pan is being re-assembled. Dan's (my nephew and VW newbie) Westie is getting a new exhaust, belts, senders and tires. Eeyore is getting an oil change and the once over for GGBXI
If you're looking for something to do or just want to hang out...
Cmon over!

What time
-
Is this thread dead?! I'm free on Thursdays now to help clean and bolt things down! Though I'd like to learn something new. I know tonight is the car show, but what are we working on in the garage?
-
No this thread is not dead... Richards car is on the Stationary Rotiserie and being worked on nightly and most weekends. Dan comes over every Tuesday & Thursday and we work on something of his, mine or somebody elses'
-
Ok, should be over Thursday. What time do you get home? I need help getting Mildred timed. I'm hoping that the timing issue is why it takes her so long to turn over. Does the Rotor only point to the No 1 cylinder once in it's cycle? So If the Rotor is pointing to no. 1 the motor has to be at TDC? Unless it's 180 off.
I just wish I wasn't afraid to do things like this on my own. Calibrating stuff scares the chit out of me. I'd much rather work on brakes, or bolt on repairs. I also haven't done a valve job in 3 or 4 years. =-/ Maybe longer?
-
Does the Rotor only point to the No 1 cylinder once in it's cycle? So If the Rotor is pointing to no. 1 the motor has to be at TDC? Unless it's 180 off.
In theory on an engine that starts and runs and had the distributor put in right, yes.
If you pop your distributor cap off and rotate the engine by hand until the rotor points towards the #1 mark in the distributor. Then look at your timing scale and turn the engine until the timing mark points to 0, that should be top dead center. With the rotor pointing towards #1 you should already be very close to the 0 mark.
-
If you spin the dizzy counter clockwise and nothing happens, should you go clockwise until the light goes on and then off and then go counter clockwise till it goes on and then off again? I just think it's so far off that when I go to time it the test light won't even be on.
-
You don't use a timing light to find TDC when you turn the engine by hand.
If your engine is timed so far off the timing scale that you can't see it when the test light flashes I would think you would either have no power or you would have blown your engine up, and probably have some bad back firing along the way too.
As far as finding TDC to adjust valves you don't turn the distributor. You turn the engine. The rotor pointing to #1 is only a reference point to get you close. Then you fine tune it to get it dead on by using the timing scale. It doesn't matter how far off your ignition timing is set. TDC for your piston will still be TDC for your valves no matter when or where the spark plug is firing.
-
I believe he means a test light (I hope) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-fc/idea.gif)
-
Me? I assumed Greg meant timing light.
Maybe I'm lost? I've never used a test light to find TDC.

test light, sorry. =-)

Easy Peasy!

turn the engine till rotor points to #1 wire on cap. Hook test light clip to distributor side of coil. ground the other end. Turn on the key. Rotate the engine until test light lights. Mark on crank pulley should line up with the left edge of the small block on the left side of the engine case. If not, loosen the 10mm nut on the dist clamp and turn the dist to make things line up and turn on the light at the proper rotation of the crankshaft. This is the way I was taught to time a V-Dub engine by a German trained mechanic way back in the '70s If I remember the engine should now be set at 71/2 degrees before top dead center "TDC" YoDa

Hmmm, I never heard that. That's pretty neat for someone that doesn't have a timing light.
Is that Type I only? And wouldn't it only work with points?
-
my grandpop would time his gm cars sometimes that way in his shop Many times, he timed by sound and would bet me to see how accurate he was checked by a timing light
i lost most times =whiteflag
-
Hmmm, I never heard that. That's pretty neat for someone that doesn't have a timing light.
Is that Type I only? And wouldn't it only work with points?
Type 1, 2, and 3 points only. Way back then we only needed a timing light to check distributor mechanical, vacuum and total advance on V-Dubs if there was a hesitation. In the '50s and early '60s timing lights were dim and difficult to read. That is why for all cars we were always wiping the timing marks and painting them white! YoDa
