Anthony (grungeant) has an issue with BlueBonnet his bus. No compression on 3.
Is anyone available this Sunday (Yes holiday weekend) to shoot down to Pennsville and pull his motor? If we have enough people we can get it done in 2 hours.
This will allow Anthony to get it fixed and we can re-install in 2 weeks.
Otherwise we schedule for 2 weeks and he misses all the June events too bawlin)0
Just need 2 teams of 3
I can do it...
Richard?
Tyler?
Marc Miller?
3Gear?
Jack?
Ant? (and your crew)
Celly?
Howard?
Joe T?
Please let me know ASAP
-
If your in a pinch and need the help- give me a yell. I'm open this weekend.
Anything for a VW.
-
Sadly i cant make it Greg, Celly, Shell, Rose and I are going to Westies In the Woods for the holiday weekend. We will be up north in Bear Country. Best of luck though gents hope all goes well. If it does get rescheduled i will do my best to be there.
-
Bummer.
You know I'd be there if I could.
This weekend is totally shot.
Be happy to help any other weekend.
-
OK Let's go for June 8. Didn't realize Westies in the woods was this weekend #banghead
More time to plan
-
I'll go.
-
June 8 looks good.
I'm in too.
-
I'm in.
Will I need to get any special tools or equipment?
-
Need an address and time.
-
Howard, I sent you a PM with my address. I'm not sure if it went through or not. I can't figure out how to see my outbox.

and donut choices... **donut.gif"
Anthony what's the agenda, yanking the engine?
-
Sorry but I can't make it guys, I have a baptism to go to.
-
Yeah, yankin the engine and left head to see why #3 has no compression.
I don't know what I need tool wise. It's a Type IV with dual carbs.
Whoever's coming call out what donuts you like.

Assuming you have a heavy duty jack and jack stands, and a decent set of sockets and metric wrenches. coupla pencils to plug the fuel line Hoping you are using PB Blaster on any bolts and nuts you see...
You have any parts to install while the engine is out, like a good engine seal, some replacement fuel lines, etc? :confused04:; 4thinking6
Using the Celly method to remove it? :confused04:;
-
I need an address/time also, please.
Thanks.
-
Is 0930 good for everyone?
-
I need an address/time also, please.
Thanks.
me too.
-
9:30 works for me too.
I think I sent everyone a PM with my address.
Let me know if you didn't get it.
Let me know donut preferences if any.
Are we going to go into lunch time?
I was thinking about ordering a hoagie platter from Capriotti's
http://capriottis.com/index.php (http://capriottis.com/index.php)
I'm not sure if I have to call it in the night before or not.
I have regular open/box metric wrenches, regular 3/8 drive and 1/2 drive sockets, and 1/4 deep sockets but no regulars. I think my sockets go to 19mm. I think my wrenches go to 24mm. I have a set of metric allen wrenches too.
My 1/4 ratchet is messed up though.
I have 4 jack stands and a floor jack, but it isn't the greatest. It can jack and hold a vehicle, but it slowly goes down. Not fast enough to see it go down, but if you have the car lifted an inch above a jack stand after about an hour it's sitting on the stand. I've never seen it go all the way to the floor though even holding a car over night. And it doesn't go very high for some reason, so I use 4x6 blocks standing long ways to jack the back of my bus from where the motor mount goes through the frame.
As far as parts to install while the motor is out I don't have any at the moment, and I don't know if I'll have time to get anything on Saturday.
I did want to replace my fuel and vent lines though.
Does anyone know what size fuel lines I need and how much length of each I should buy?
I have no charcoal canister. If anyone has the parts I would like to do that, but I'm not sure how it can work with my carbs.
If it looks like we can do something with it and someone has the parts let me know how much.
My crankcase vent just goes straight down. Not sure if we can do anything better with it or not.
I don't have any EGR stuff, but I was wondering if there is anyway to make it work with aftermarket carbs or not, or if it's just too unreliable to even bother to figure out?
I also want to move my fuel pump and fuel filter out of the engine compartment. Right now it's mounted at the bottom of the fuel tank wall in the middle.
I have a battery tray, but I'm not sure how we could do that.
I think I might have a bad motor or trans mount too.
-
Take a breath, son, its gonna be fine... %$oldcit
You have plenty of time to get any parts needed, as your engine problem is diagnosed. Id definitely take this as an opportunity to clean that compartment out real gooder and get to all the crap that is a PIA to get to- fuel lines plus the fuel tank connector that crumbles like cake are good starts,. I'll defer to the Bus experts on what else...
You may want to take a bunch of pics that document where stuff is, just in case...
Capriottis , OMG- that should have been mentioned first, dude. That place rocks. **^bana0
-
Cannot make it bud, but I'm sending good energy your way brother.
-
Anthony- go on the Samba and search "charcoal canister" there are instructions how to make one yourself as that part is NLA. I think I remember they use charcoal pellets used for aquarium filters.
Do you have an electric fuel pump?
-
Sunday Jun 8th 0930 Pennsville NJ
Coffee & Donuts fine Anthony. We wont be that long.
Here's the plan folks. We'll do a quick compression test and then a pressure test (to see where the air goes)
If we don't get favorable results, we'll pull the engine and I'll take it up to the Taj so George can check it out
-
Yes, I have an electric fuel pump.
I returned the compression tester I borrowed from autozone, so if someone has one could they please bring it?
Also the adapter piece to blow air into the spark plug hole.

THANK YOU! To everyone who came out. =+grouphu9

It went VERY well. Jack, Muggy, Mrs Baha and I left Jacks house just after 0845 and arrived at Ant & Jeanettes as Richard, John G & Howard arrived
Tracy read off the checklist as we followed each step. Muggy tore the tape for the labels...
Anthonys bus has dual Webers so a lot of the 20 something connections we normally encounter weren't there!
Jack helped out by eliminating a couple of steps in the checklist
Got the motor out without incident thanks to Howard's coveralls! Oh yeah and Howard too...

And off we went! Taking it to the Taj for the professionals to take a look at it

Your link is for new...
-
I didn't see one specificly for rebuilt, but at the bottom it says they have them for $299, and they are garaunteed to never drop a seat for life.
-
You sure ya need em yet? Did George say so?
-
Not yet. Just window shopping right now. I'm trying to get an idear of what's decent for how much, if I need it.
Some people said I may have a dropped seat. I'm not sure what that means. I guess it means the valve seat is sunk into the head?
That might be right because I see more threads on the #3 exhaust valve than the other 3 adjusters.
So I liked what it said about garaunteed to never drop a seat. But I don't know if that's just something standard on all new heads or what.
-
George took a minute to test #3. TDC probably dropped a seat, but he's got to finish the one he's working on before he can dig in

-
If it is a drpped seat does that mean the head is junk, or is that repairable?

Wow, thanks John!
After reading the first page I don't feel I need to read any more, nor do I think I will be buying anything from them.
-
as Steveo always says " the samba is your friend"
But only if you know how to work it.

I was thinking I should probably buy this to prevent a problem in the future.
Or is there some way I can do something with what I have for less?
I found original filler necks like this on the Samba, but they cost more and obviously were used.
-
I was going to tell you about that...
Go ahead and order that one.

Hey guys,
I wanted to let everyone know we finally started the bus Monday night. There's some bugs that need to be worked out before it can actually be driven, but I wanted to thank everyone that came over and helped, and everyone that helped along the way.
Thank You 11&*
-
We worked on your bus???? 4thinking6
How long ago was that?
-
George came over last night.
He said drive it!
