Po' mans Kafer bar
« on: February 27, 2010, 08:31:41 pm »

Ok so we needed to stiffen up the rear end in this monstrosity.  A kafer bar would do the trick but we have a budget that doesnt include $150 for a crappy bugpack one or $300 for a good one so what to do.  $15 at the hardware store and some cutting, welding and head scratching and here it is.

The top bolts allow for adjustment of preload and it all works pretty well.

In related news I finally sucked it up and went through the MVC process for getting a title where one doesnt exist, its gotten much simpler since last time I looked into it and really wasnt all that bad.  I now have a title for the monstrosity.

First.. I must compliment you on your electric tape measure. Those who don't own one mock us, until the first time they borrow ours... Resistance is futile

Now for my actual question... Was is "kafer bar"?

It was a gift, but yeah, it kicks butt ;)

Kafer bar, or Truss bar, is used to firm up the frame horns so there is no flex under hard acceleration.  Used in the Kafer cup racing series so that's where the name comes from.  With the trans and engine just hanging on those 2 frame horns there can be a good deal of flex.  In hard use (like racing) the flex can cause damage to the trans and CV joints.  The Kafer bar ties the 2 shock towers together and then uses 2 down bars tied to the cross bar to carry the load of the frame horns to make everything solid.  Using this setup we can hang the subie motor without the need for a front motor mount on the subie (but we'll probably add one just to be safe)

Yup.That's what I tell everybody too

Got the POS Bugpack one on the Baja. Fortunately I have the not-so-crappy mid point solid mount also

Used in the Kafer cup racing series so that's where the name comes from.

Love Kafer Cup!!!! It needs to come to Milleville  Ghug

We're running full solid mounts plus the bar, need to firm this thing up as much as we can :)

Hey, if enough of us put together some Kafer cup cars we could probably get a series run down at NJMP :)
