Hello all...

It's official: skybus passed inspection this morning!  whoo-hoo!  many thanks to Jack and Pat for all the Friday morning (and afternoon) help sessions, and to everyone's advice on here...

Jack and Pat: so I applied bulb grease to the terminals on both sockets in the back, but not to the actual bulbs...  seemed to fix the problem..  I figured I would put it on the bulbs "when I got around to it" ...took it to inspection this morning, and the guy had me put the left blinker, then right, then left, then right, and his face was kinda scrunched up while he was looking at it.  Then he told me that my right blinker might need a new bulb, cause it was kinda dim... but he passed me :)   then on the way to work, I got off the highway and had my right blinker on--it wasn't working!  ack!  I guess I need to use the bulb grease on the actual bulbs now...

I'm just glad it worked well enough for inspection...  It was so exciting to have a car pass inspection, I haven't had that happen since my first time going to inspection in my 1981 chevette in 1995 (the chevette only ever passed inspection one time... poor little car, RIP).  I took a photo of my inspection sticker :)

well I figured better safe than sorry so I just went and dabbed some grease on the bulb on the right..  still having trouble so I checked the bulb in the front and lo and behold, only one of the two filaments was lighting up...  I happened to have a spare bulb which I'm not sure if it's the same but it seemed to fit okay (the new bulb is an 1157--anyone know if that's what goes in the front right blinker?  it looked like the same bulb but I couldn't identify any markings on the old one) ... anyway, now the blinkers work fine.  yay!

We fixed and sanded the ground on the rear right. Might as well do the left one that has that big washer on it now that you have the grease. The connectors that go tio the lights can always be "tightened up" if you still have problems.

Sky,

on a "dual filament bulb " they don't light up at teh same time, 1 filamant is for turn signals and 1 is for your parking lights. The same goes for the rear lights except 1 is for the brake light ( or turn signal depending on how its set up ) Sounds exactly what Pat just said, check the grounds.

Bob,

I was checking it with the headlights on though... shouldn't they both have been lit, with one blinking?   it might be a coincidence (because before the lights sometimes were working, sometimes weren't) but it seems like the right blinker is working properly now

i'm confused--when do you use an 1157 and when an 1156?

the socket itself will have 2 contacts at the bottom if it takes a dual filament bulb. Don't know the difference between an 1157 or 1156.

if its not the bulb then it could be either the + connection ( down in the socket ) or the ground. I suggest you invest in a $2.00 12V test light, you can ground one end out and probe the contacts in the socket with the other. Thats a fast way to see if a circuit has voltage.

no, I mean I think it WAS the bulb, because it appears to be working fine now.  I'm just not sure if I put the right bulb in.  it appears similar to the one that was in there before, but I'm not sure

I'll see if it continues to blink properly on my drive home tonight

Sky, my left blinker was blinking faster than normal and was also dim. I cleaned that crud out of the socket and bought a new bulb, it fixed the problem. Make sure that the socket is clean. I dunno how your lights are, but my reverse lights didn't work, so we moved the ground or lead closer to the bottom of the bulb and it worked. Some times there is just a crappy connection.

Jim,

Yeah that was me :)

Matt,

It's a GREAT feeling.  I once had an 81 Chevette that passed inspection once and never again.  I drove it around for about six months with a pile of rejection stickers (I think I had four when they stopped adding new ones)..I got pulled over almost every time I drove anywhere.  It's so satisfying to drive past police cars and not have any reason for them to pull me over! :)
