Fixed My 34 PICT "Won't Idle" Problem

I'm running a 34PICT-3 on the '40 Ford Kit.  Carb was new when i built the engine in 2006.  During break-in the engine ran well and even passed DMV emissions on the first try!

After a short while I was having idling troubles.  The carb wasn't responding well to tuning of the mixture and by-pass screws.  An internet search session introduced me to the "pilot/idle jet" on the right side of the carb.

Once I pulled it out and cleaned it with carb cleaner, the carb once again responded to tuning and a good idle returned.

In October, the bad idling returned worse then ever and the beetle was just about un-driveable (although we all know if it runs at all, a beetle is never undrivable.)

No problem, just clean the idle jet and everything will be fine right? NOT!

I spent many hours trying to resolve the problem on the day of the Clayton Fall Festival........ Adjusted valves & timing and searched for vacuum leaks to no avail.  I finally ended-up getting it to run it at about 1500 rpm just so we could get to the show. (That's why Mike and I didn't show until 2:30)

I ran across an article on the internet that mentioned another jet behind a brass cover located just to the left of the idle jet.  I can't find what this jet is called, not that it matters.



Today I removed that brass cover, sprayed the port with carb cleaner and removed and cleaned the idle jet again.  The engine runs perfectly now and idles better then ever!  Great response to the mixture & by-pass screws and I can get it to run down to 400 rpm!

Fingers crossed........ Problem Solved?

  The problem came back again!   I really hope you do not have the problem I have had for quite a few years,

I call it rust dust, very very very fine rust slowly accumulates in the carb over time and makes the car run horribly, yes even to the point of bein undrivable - my situation.

  When I got my vert, the fuel filter was clogged with rust, the tank was all rusted, and maybe the fuel lines?

  Even though I replaced the fuel tank a few times, I was still getting this rust.  Soon after getting the car, I was tearing down my carb cleaning it and rebuilding it about 2 - 3 times a week.  Over  a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time, it is now I rebuild it about 2x a year. I still get this rust dust, and it can only be seen  in the carb bowl, but it can pervade everything esle, so I do a full cleaning each time

Hence, I put together a step by step pictorial with my daughter Katie, on tearing down this carb and rebuilding it.

I can R&R a carb real quick now  888  , including tearing it down, cleaning and back togehter

Hey Matt, had the rust dust in both my 34pict and the 30pict. Looked like hard red clay in the bowl.
I don't know how fast my car will go.
It's more important that I know how fast my car will stop.

these guys are right, sounds like rust in the tank. I always thought a fuel filter would catch fine particles of rust but guess not. I had a similar problem with my 72 on the way home from Clayton. My car died or ran real poor under 3000 rpm. I'm running dual 40mm Delortos so we're talking 4 idle jets! I pulled all the jets ( Idle, main, air correctors, emulsion tubes thats X4! ) and used a can of carb cleaner on everything. Once everything was reassembled the difference was like night and day! Smooth running, no hesitation and perfect idle. Looks like I'm going to be pulling my tank sometime in the spring and either replacing it or going for a POR-15 tank kit.

Yep, we got it,thanks,  there are a lot of secrets about the 34pict. Somebody should have done an  99off LoL LoL LoL
I don't know how fast my car will go.
It's more important that I know how fast my car will stop.

I beleive that is the auxillary fuel jet and plug..........

  Dont know how I missed that in my rebuild diagram 888  Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

Thats the pilot jet on the right side and on the left side is idle gas cut off jet.
I don't have to go to work in the morning....
