VW did a great job Designing the engine and it’s not unusual for the little engine that could to go 200k mi except for having a couple of valve jobs along the way if you do two simple things, keep it tuned and regular oil changes.
If you checked a stock crank for balance you would find it is balanced very well from the factory. I agrtee with Bob to a certen extent but not the need for a counterwighted crank. The not so secret, secret is, to balance the crank, rods, pistons and flywheel, the whole rotating mass for better engine longevity.
A 1776 is not what I consider a very big engine to spend the extra money on a counterweighted crank when a good balancve job will do the job, but I also know how you drive and nothing you do will help that poor engine burnrubber :icon_tongue:
