So, I think I should own a grease gun
« on: February 21, 2014, 05:15:06 pm »

I'm sick and tired of wondering if all my grease points got hit, and if I'm going to crawl under there to look, I might as well grease them myself.
What should I know about grease guns?
What fittings or adapters will I need to get with it?
I've never used a non air powered grease gun.
How are manual grease guns?
Does this one seem ok? http://www.sears.com/speedhex-heavy-duty-mini-3-oz-grease-gun/p-00934296000P?prdNo=4
I would prefer to have a small grease gun than the full size ones unless they are worthless.
I think I would also like a manual one unless they are just inferior to air powered ones.

If I remember right there are four zerks total on the arms. Suggest borrowing one from one of the members and buy the tubes of grease. The mini ones are junk IMHO
Put the coin instead towards a Bentley manual that can help ya with many questions

Hope that helps!

Do Not buy the mini grease gun.
The money you save over the full sized gun will be eaten up by all the extra cartridges you'll have to buy,
And they cost twice as much (by volume)

Yes, I own the Hard Covered Bentley.
I also have a Haynes manual.

What about a regular sized manual grease gun? Or should I get an air powered one?

I think the original spec was to grease every 15k or so. So unless you put those kinds of miles on your bus, it's a tool you would certainly use very infrequently. Just borrow one from a friendly club member, or steal one from an unfriendly one.

Hope that helps

I don't know.
I would give each zerk a few squirts every 3k. I put about 10k on since July.
I think it would probably be good to have a grease gun.

I looked at air powered ones today, and you could buy one for around $30, but they all got terrible reviews and people made comments like they wasted more grease and wasted more time going back to the store to have them swapped out. Some were DOA, some worked a few squirts and died.

I'm thinking maybe I should just get a cheap one like this http://www.harborfreight.com/grease-gun-with-pistol-grip-66664.html
and hope for the best.

My pop taught me the idea behind greasing was to push all the old  grease out kind of like a colon cleanse for auto joints. But no worries whatever works for ya!

IMHO I had one of those and ended up getting one with a lever. If I found it I'd give it to you Maybe Jackwagen will chime in if he's not busy napping now or putting up and taking down his awning :)  :)

Haha!
What is the bennefit of the ones with the lever?
They seem like they would be more difficult to hold tight to the zerk and also pump it with your free hand.

I also saw this which I can buy locally
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/performance-tools-pistol-grip-grease-gun-w54204/7070489-P?searchTerm=grease

And which grease?
http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_products.sd?iid=37&catid=14&loc=show&headTitle=%20-%20Lucas%20X-TRA%20Heavy%20Duty%20Grease
or
http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_products.sd?iid=46&catid=14&loc=show&headTitle=%20-%20Red%20%27N%27%20Tacky%20Grease
OR Something else altogether?

Left hand held the hose to the zerk, right hand pumped the lever. To be honest, I just bought whatever cheap crap fit the grease gun I didn't put that much thought into it

Hope that helps !

Yeah and it sucked so bad he gave it to me...

You want a 14oz grease gun Ant... The one with the hard tube and interchangeable hose. Use the hard tube on most fittings and the hose for hard to reach areas. A good grease gun develops a ton of pressure. The lever types do that much easier than the pistol grips

What sucked, Jack's old grease gun?

What do you mean by hard tube?
Just the part where the cartridge goes into is made out of metal?

They have generic ones like this at my local parts store in town. Is something like this decent?

Yup... That'll do

Just remember you get what you pay for

The hard tube is the one mounted in the photo. It comes off and you can mount the flexible tube when needed
