Ethanol proof fuel sender seal?
« on: July 06, 2014, 04:59:05 pm »

Does anyone know of anyone that makes an ethanol proof fuel sending unit seal for the top of the tank?
I was just about to order one, and I wasn't sure if one of the available ones was better than another, or if they were all the same.

Or does anyone know of a modern vehicle that would use one that is the same size that might be ethanol proof as OEM?

Another thought:
I know from hauling fuel the standard 4" gaskets in the our product delivery hoses are black. They seem to be made out of a rubber similar to a tire. Maybe butyl?
There is also other gaskets that the company usually doesn't buy because they cost more,  but occasionally we get green ones that seem to made out of something more like silicone. I have also seen tan ones too, but I haven't checked them out closely enough.
I know the black ones shrink and start cracking after about a month.
The green ones seem to last a year or so and I've never seen a tan one wear out.
The tan ones are usually only found at facilities where you load straight ethanol.

Now I said all that to ask this:
Is there a place that sells big O-rings?
And if so is it possible to take a stock fuel sender seal and match it up and get it say the green or tan colored rubber?

Anthony- how would ethanol fuel corrode the seal at the top of the tank unless your tank is completely full of gas with no air pocket? :confused04:; I guess it sloshes around in there a bit, but the breakdown can't be the same as fuel hose that is in constant contact with fuel... I think the seals purpose is to seal the vapors, so as to not stink your inside cabin up. some folks use neoprene O-rings on the bolts as washers, dunno if that's any better 2@cent

Its actually the ethanol vapors and air mixing together that cause problems, which is why they say to keep things filled up as opposed to draining them

My  2@cent

Replace it with a quality seal. Cut the hole in the deck above the sender so if you need to change it later, you can  also my  2@cent

I meant WW often has options for many types of seals. I just bought a chit ton of seals for the MugBug II , everything from vent wing seals, window seals, fender beading, and door stuff. Call em up and ask - I want German as its a waste of my time to buy crap and then have to fight with Chinese garbage to make it all fit to save the 20% to 40% price difference.  Just sayin...

Now, if I was retired and had plenty of time during the day to nap 2-sleep2 and eat western omelets, eat.gi+] maybe it would be different  **^bana0

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm not sure if I ever even tasted a western omlet.
