36 HP parts, what to keep?
« on: November 10, 2019, 01:34:40 pm »

Had to do a small attic clean-out - re-arrangement which put me face to face with the 36HP parts I have up there.. among other vw parts.

There is a fair amount up there for 36 HP, but of course most are used - maybe all.
So what is reasonable to keep for all things 36 HP, in that it can be refurbished if necessary - (or can they  be bought aftermarket new?) - such as
Heads
Cylinders
Pushrods
Pushrod tubes
Oil cooler
generator
Flywheel

Can any of the above be bought new for a reasonable price in the forseable future.. if so, I could trim down what I have up there...

I have 2,  36 HP cases  - one of which was not used in car, but was rather used for a water pump. The case has a blank for a serial number - probably has the equivalent of less than 20 miles on the case. I know to keep those, along with all the tin I have.

you surprise me Matt. Us 36'ers always save everything.

You can buy anything aftermarket but unless the parts are scored or trashed- save them.
otherwise give them to me

Yes, i have been holding onto everything... but was wondering like for pushrods...

can get...

  https://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC-111-109-301-ASET - 8 pushrods for $160.00

so now not feeling so lazy, looking up more...

   https://aapistons.com/products/vw-77mm-type-1-piston-kit-36  4 pistons, @ $100.00

  https://aapistons.com/products/vw-77mm-type-1-cylinder-kit-36?_pos=1&_sid=bd0e161bf&_ss=r  4 cylinders ~$240

but still will keep what I have!

Doubtful any new 36hp cases out there, but did come across 2 sold NOS 36 hp case, went for $1,100 &  $2,000

So with any used case if the crank bearing area is worn, can get it bored, but what about the camshaft area in the case. If I remember right there are / were no bearings for the camshaft.. it just turned on the case material. If that is worn, is the case shot?

Hello Matt,
I am looking for engine tin and a stock air cleaner for a 1957 Beetle. Would you have that or know who would?
Thanks,
Dave Macken

Hi Dave,

What tin specifically?, and I might have a 57 air cleaner...another great source for 57 tin & everything else is Bob (Herbie).
I will have to look for the air cleaner.

Thanks for getting back to me so quick, Matt, I will let you know what metal I need. Please advise on the air cleaner and asking price.
Thank you,
Dave
